Some of you have previously expressed interest in donating food to OccupyDC. Those of us in OccupyFaithDC have been a supply line to OccupyDC since October, and we have set up a system where nonperishable supplies--staples, really-- can be delivered to the PeaceHouse on 12th St. NW, and the Occupiers there cook the food and distribute it.
It is really easy--and pretty cheap--to buy these sorts of things (pasta, dry beans, coffee, oatmeal, jar spaghetti sauce, peanut butter) in bulk. I am willing to act as a conduit for such supplies and to provide a central dropping-off point, if people wish to donate (actually, I'm already doing this for a group of my friends). Message me, and we'll work out the logistics.
So, if anyone wants to support our local movement for economic justice and a better future by dropping off some dry goods or peanut butter or such, please let me know. And don't let the news media fool you. These folks are still working. Not only did they save a woman in PG County from eviction, they are organizing a slew of Earth Day events.
Here is a list of the staples they usually need:
"Anyone and everyone is welcome to bring food. If you want, feel free to bring veggies and fresh supplements, BUT please focus on nonperishable staples that will keep. Specifically, consider the following:
- Pasta
- Brown rice
- Lentils
- Oatmeal
- Pancake Mix
- Cooking Oil
- Sugar
- Salt
- Dry Spices
Think in bulk! It makes things cheaper, but more importantly, it lends itself to cooking in bulk, and that's the key.
You can bring these items to the Peace House at any time, and because they're nonperishable, there's no need to hold back, so please see what you can do -- not just as individuals but within your faith communities and organizations."
And here's what they especially need right now:
- Pasta
- Coffee
- Peanut Butter
- Cooking Oil
- Cereal (e.g. oatmeal)
Thank you all for contributing to this movement.
