This election season, there are a lot of distractions in the news, from a few Secret Service personnel acting up to distortions of truths Democrats say about Republicans. But once again, in May, the organization Republicans voted to destroy in 2006 is working to help feed your hungry neighbors.
"But Allergywoman," you may say, "this isn't until Saturday, May 12. Why are you bringing this up so early?"
You ask good questions. I'm bringing this up early so that you know about it and can plan to help out. As things stand, I'm sure a lot of people here and elsewhere have to plan their food budgets out far in advance, so the sooner you know, the sooner you can decide whether you can spare, say, $5 to get some cans of food for May 12.
And, I'll be honest, I'm bringing this up so we can also get motivated to save one of the largest union employers in our country, the Post Office. My best friend in high school was the daughter of a mail carrier. I don't want to see the 'Con efforts to take them down succeed. So far, Harry Reid has an agreement with the Postmaster General that will keep the status quo until May 15, but that's not good enough to save the Post Office from the requirement they fund retirement benefits for the next 75 years...in ten years.
So, please plan to buy some food for your neighbors and put it out with the mail on May 12. And before then, contact your federal legislators and try to save the post office. Thanks.
