From the GREAT STATE OF MAINE…
24 Hours Later: Thank You!!!
You really came through in our C&J fundraiser yesterday for Netroots for the Troops. Our goal was $1,000. You dug deeper than that and donated a combined total of $2,100. Ya big-hearted lugs.
Some donor comments:
The Nation owes [our troops] a debt of gratitude---here is one small part.
Thanks for your service.
In honor of my nephew, serving in the Third Brigade at FOB Shank, Afghanistan.
Thank you for your many sacrifices.
Thank you for being there.
We remember.
May you all come home SOON and safely!
NFTT Rocks!
BiPM made me do it!
If you missed it yesterday,
you can still donate by clicking here. Every little bit helps as we plan for Packing Day on June 9th at
Netroots Nation in Providence. Netroots For The Troops, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization. Translation: your donation is tax-deductible.
Thanks again. I'm still working on the logistics, but one way or another I'm having all of your babies.

Tuesday Words of Wisdom from the Right-wing Blogosphere:
In case you haven't noticed, a TEA Party rebellion is on and Free Republic signed on years ago. There is no turning back. No more crap from the GOP-e!! They've screwed us for the last time!! Karl Rove and Mitt Romney, et al, loathe conservatism and loathe the tea party and took it upon themselves to use their money and connections to destroy nearly every one of our conservative tea party candidates while pushing their big government RINOS. That makes them the enemy. I will not reward that betrayal by giving them my support or my vote. … I'd rather fight and die like a man than bend over and be screwed by a RINO!! I refuse to kiss Karl Rove or Mitt Romney's rings!! They can kiss my rosy red ass instead!!
---Jim Robinson at Free Republic
All together now: 1…2…3…
Pucker up, sonny!!!

CHEERS to green shoots blossoming into freedom blooms of prosperity (individual results may vary). Some good news on the economic front which, of course, is the ONE AND ONLY THING standing between Obama and his reelection. (Just ask any beltway pundit.) 1) Gas prices are trending down. 2) A gaggle of economists is convinced that things are getting better 20% faster than predicted. 3) Obamacare savings look reasonably promising. And 4) the president is still beating Romney in almost every poll (including swing state polls and now Gallup) despite overwhelming negative press that goes far beyond anything any GOP candidate has endured. I'm quick to add, of course, the usual disclaimer that always accompanies anything even resembling positive news for the president: I hate disclaimers. Obama in a landslide.
JEERS to awesome sights delayed…again. Sorry, Gotham. The retired Space Shuttle Enterprise won’t be flying over your skies today, either, on its way to the retirement home:
NASA managers, in coordination with Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum officials, tentatively selected Wednesday, April 25 as the date to ferry space shuttle Enterprise from Washington’s Dulles International Airport to New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. A large region of low pressure dominating the east coast has made it difficult to reliably predict an acceptable day for the flight. Once officially approved, NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) with Enterprise mounted atop will fly at a relatively low altitude over various parts of the New York City metropolitan area on Wednesday, April 25.
In its place, MinistryofTruth will float above Lower Manhattan in a barcalounger held aloft by a hundred helium balloons, scaring the bejeezus out of 1 Percenters in their corner offices with nothing but a "We Are The 99%" sash and a bullhorn.
JEERS to everyday low morals. Golly, no one could've predicted…
Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, squelched an internal investigation into allegations of bribery at its Mexican subsidiary instead of broadening the probe, the New York Times reported on Saturday. … Wal-Mart sent investigators to Mexico City and found a paper trail of hundreds of suspect payments totaling more than $24 million, but the company's leaders then shut down the investigation and notified neither U.S. nor Mexican law enforcement officials, the Times reported.
And now the punchline…
Wal-Mart said in a statement on Saturday it was "deeply concerned" about the allegations in the Times report and began an investigation…
Said the head of Wal-Mart's secret Squelching Committee: "Squee! Guaranteed employment for another six months."
CHEERS to easy layups. Today is Pig in a Blanket Day. Or, as it's also known: Rush Limbaugh nappytime.

CHEERS to liberté, egalité, kickassité! In France, the battle lines were drawn over the weekend in preliminary elections---it'll be Sarkozy vs. Hollande battling it out in a steel cage surrounded by barbed wire and a moat with alligators a café surrounded by baguettes and wheels of cheese. Arthur Goldhammer at Harvard's Center for European Studies says this an important election, and I agree…mainly because he'll give me a purple nurple if I don't, so so pay attention:
If Hollande is elected and goes through with trying to renegotiate the euro zone pact, he’ll find support from countries like Spain and Italy. … [E]veryone outside Germany has an interest in changing things. And I think [German Chancellor Angela] Merkel has evolved on this, recognizing that an all-austerity approach isn’t going to work. But she’s facing her own election in 2013 and a substantial portion of her party doesn’t want to budge on this. … Hollande’s election might give her some room to maneuver, by building a consensus for more pro-growth policies. Hollande’s election could be a signal of a change in thinking and influence German politics.
The decisive second election is in 12 days, and the excitement is building. The French are so jazzed about it that they've gone from distantly dispassionate to dizzingly deadpan.
CHEERS to Kodak moments. In light of the shuttle Discovery's photogenic retirement last week, it's worth noting that 22 years ago today, it carried the Hubble space telescope into space. Click here to check out the latest image---from the Tarantula Nebula---the Hubble staff released for the occasion. Democrats will see the wonder of an evolving universe and the promise of infinite possibilities. Republicans will see oil fields and Obama's birthplace.
P.S. They also found some aurorae on Uranus. I'd get that looked at if I were you.

Five years ago in C&J: April 24, 2007
CHEERS to mood mud. Says here that playing in the dirt may act as a natural anti-depressant. No wonder Karl Rove always looks so happy.
DO SVIDANIYA to a real Russian bear. Former president Boris Yeltsin has died at 76. He'll be laid to rest after a modest ceremony. His liver will receive a state funeral.

And just one more…
JEERS to hilarity, GOP style. Ladies and gentlemen, please give a warm C&J welcome to the misogynist stand-up twitter stylings---now all deleted by the user along with over 800 others because they were just TOO darn funny---of former Bush crony Richard Grenell, whom Mitt Romney just brought on board as his super-awesome spokesman on foreign policy! Take it away…..Dick:

Today's Shameless C&J Testimonial:
At one point or another, there's a good chance an older adult over 65 might wind up in Cheers and Jeers. A new study suggests those adults could wind up with a new set of memory problems following their visit.
