From RFrancisR's sweeping overview of gay and lesbian history to musing85's stunning remembrance of Hitler's gay victims to my diaries on the Society for Human Rights, the Daughters of Bilitis, and the Stonewall Riots, Daily Kos has seen a great deal of writing on the subject of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history. And so it occurred to me: Why not have a group devoted specifically to recovering and preserving this history?
We have History for Kossacks, which does an outstanding job bringing all types of history to us Kossacks. But some kinds of history--such as LGBT history--have been especially marginalized and hidden over the years. I've found that diaries on LGBT history are usually quite well received here on Daily Kos. But I've also found that much of the history is not well-known.
As an LGBT historian myself, I feel that Daily Kos needs a central location where all works of LGBT history are published. Dave in Northridge and I teamed up on this one, since we are both intimately involved with LGBT history. And so I would like to announce the formation of our group: Remembering LGBT History. Here is our official blurb:
Much of history is hidden, especially for groups outside the mainstream of dominant culture. This group is devoted to the recovery of LGBT history, and it welcomes anyone interested in the subject.
Follow me below the fold.
I've invited several people to join the group already. But I'm sure I missed some interested people. You don't have to be an LGBT historian to join--you just need to have an interest in reading, recovering, and preserving this history. If you want to write, that would be great, too.
As you can see, I've already republished all of the diaries on LGBT history to the group. But we'll need group members who can either write more diaries on LGBT history or spot related diaries and republish them.
If you're interested in joining the group, please comment below or send us a message.
If you don't want to join--but want to keep up-to-date on the latest DKos diaries on LGBT history--please follow the group. We need a readership, too!
We'll also have a tag--Remembering LGBT History--if you want to follow that as well.
I hope this group will be a fun, educational experience for Kossacks. If you have any suggestions or feedback, please comment below!
