One of the more prominent black conservatives in Florida is O'Neal Dozier, pastor of Worldwide Christian Center in Pompano Beach. Dozier is a classic Christofascist. Indeed, according to a piece Mother Jones did on him back in February, he openly admits that he drew inspiration from D. James Kennedy, whose former church is based just down the road from him in Fort Lauderdale. Small wonder that he sounds like Kennedy or Pat Robertson with black skin--according to a 2003 piece in the Broward/Palm Beach New Times, he has openly called for fundies to take control of society, and believes that homosexuality "makes God want to vomit." And yet, Jeb Bush relied on this loon for advice on appointing judges in Broward County. He also served as co-chairman of Rick Santorum's Florida campaign.
In his biography, Dozier claims to have played for the Chicago Bears and New York Jets back in the 1970s. But a quick search of the player database at NFL.com reveals that Dozier never played a meaningful down in the NFL. Only three guys named Dozier have ever appeared in an NFL regular-season game--and none of them are named O'Neal Dozier. While it can't be determined whether Dozier is lying about ever signing an NFL contract, this much is beyond dispute--he never actually got on the field for the Bears or Jets.
As near as I can determine, no outlet anywhere has even bothered to check to see if Dozier ever played a meaningful down. In the process, they have allowed him to trade on the notoriety of being a former NFL player without actually checking that claim out.
Something tells me that Dozier needs to be more forthcoming about his actual NFL experience.
