Driving home from dinner, a planned-for-tonite TC diary on Convenience Green and a standalone piece on Native American school "mascots" on my mind, and a song came on the radio that changed my plans. I promise you both of the aforementioned diaries, but follow me below the dingledoodlesquiggliedKosagnocchidividerthingie fold for tonite's actual topic after a word from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it to topcomments at gmail by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
NOTE: Bowing to that newfangled DK4 stuff :-), you also may send nominations to the Top Comments group email. If you don't see a nomination you made to there in the diary, please pipe up - it means we're still trying to remember not to forget to check!
The song was If Today Was Your Last Day by Nickelback, and if you're not a fan of the band then there are plenty of meta diaries to occupy you, or go ahead and skip down to the Tops. In keeping with Fair Use, here's a few snippets:
If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last
Leave old pictures in the past?
Donate every dime you had, if today was your last day?
What if, what if, if today was your last day?
And would you call those friends you never see?
Reminisce old memories?
Would you forgive your enemies?
And would you find that one you're dreaming of?
So do whatever it takes
'Cause you can't rewind a moment in this life
Let nothing stand in your way
'Cause the hands of time are never on your side
I had a mammogram today, a routine (if delayed) screening as opposed to one in response to symptoms. Nothing to worry about, but still... So when this song played, I got to thinking
What if it's not routine. What if I get hit by a bus tomorrow? What if... What would I do if today was my last day?
Some of that last day (which is going to need to be about 72 hours long, it appears) is easy to visualize: I'd spend it with those whom I love most in this world, my family and closest, dearest friends. Share with them all the things I keep to myself because they simply sound TOO sappy and would totally blow my reputation :-). I'd lavish enough love on my children to try to last their lifetimes. I'd have a piece of the best chocolate in the world. In the candlelit glow of a darkened room, I'd make long slow love until we were not just done, but sated.
Yes, I'd make sure my assets were all headed out of my hands and into others, be they for my children's future, or to charity. It's not like having a residual balance in my account tomorrow will do much for anyone, y'know? I'd doublecheck that my organ donor card was on my person, too. I'm not gonna need those bits, either.
But then there's the harder question: Would I forgive my enemies? I'd like to think so, not that there are many I'd place in that category. Forgiveness, as we've said here before, can be hard. In truth, I'd like to be able to forgive long before my last day, so I can enjoy the peace of heart that goes with it.
When that last day comes, may I have lived it just like the day prior, and the day before that... to the fullest, and trying my best to make the world a better place than I found it. How about you?
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything
without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do
not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
From Land of Enchantment:
In today's C&J, lineatus had a good one!
From belinda ridgewood:
In today's J Town diary, Ooooh shared a photo of the Children's Peace Memorial in Hiroshima Peace Park, leading to a thoughtful response from Tchrldy about her use of the park's website with her World History students.
From PBen:
In Jed Lewison's It's 'inappropriate' to suggest.... diary, Sir Walter Scott wrote "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive", and Nicolas Fouquet nailed it in this observation. Vayle hit the nail on the young Mitt's head!
From Chrislove:
In my diary about a North Carolina pastor who urged parents from the pulpit to beat the gay out of their children, raptavio nails it with this comment laying out everything Jesus has ever said about homosexuality.
From Angie in WA State:
This comment by herefortehbeer in this stupendously important but quite brief diary by Armando. I predict that this diary will be the highest rec'd diary on DKos, ever. At least it should be. herefortehbeer's comment fit right in with the diary theme, so I had to pick it from the many other laudable comments in the diary threads.
From Yours Truly, brillig:
So Laura Clawson shares with us Mitt's recipe to get ahead in life... just borrow from your parents, like Tagg did. abs0628 highlights the hypocrisy in that statement.
zenbassoon's diary on Romney staffer Richard Grenell's resignation due to homosexuality led to a nice thread begun by Calouste.
