A first hand dispatch from South Texas.
(Disclaimer: I'll never live down not getting a name or a picture. I understand that. Regardless, I wanted to share this disgusting experience.)
While my wife and I were at lunch today celebrating some good news with our jobs, we were seated near an area Republican politician and one of his staffers. Those facts and his admission that he is a recovering alcoholic (who was drinking) that used to work with Hays County in some respect are all the identifiers I could get. I should have just asked his name but honestly I was trying hard not to call him some choice names to his face and just enjoy our date so direct contact was definitely a bad idea.
He works with someone named David and they just came back from touring various cities and states including Florida. He was talking about how he wishes "Hispanics" would come back to the U.S. because he's tired of "doing his own manual labor."
He was also discussing the need for legislative changes that would make it easier for companies to fire pregnant women because they're "taking too much time off and hurting businesses." Specifically because the Family Medical Leave Act is "hurting corporations' bottom line" by "forcing them to leave a position open when the expectant mom is using her time off instead of being able to just fire her and fill her position."
And here's the most disturbing part. He was discussing how proud he was of his advice to corporate constituents about how to dodge the FMLA by simply waiting for the mothers to finish their maternity leave and then using another excuse to fire them when they come back.
No Republican war on women?
