My friend Mike joined the Army. I call Mike a kid but he is not that much younger than me, he is in his mid-twenties, I'm not that much older than him, but I look at him like a younger brother, Mike is one of those people you just can't help but like.
I want Mike to come back safe after his tour of duty. Mike is no fool, he knows what he is getting into. Courage, fearlessness, this kid has got it. I want the best for my buddy Mike.
Mike is making a sacrifice. I am honored by that. He wants a better life for himself and serving his country is how he will achieve that. I am 100% confident that Mike will fulfill his part of the deal. Now I want to help.
I want this kid to have access to quality, affordable health care when he needs it, during and after his service. I want Mike to be able to prosper when he comes home so he can have a decent job with good wages and benefits. I want Mike to have a good retirement someday. I want my friend Mike and all of our troops to have a shot at the American Dream.
I come from a military family, my father served in the Navy and his father before him. Though I have not served I honor the service of those who do. I want to help out in some small way . . .
More below the fold
In many ways, I have been very lucky in my life. I hope Mike carries some of my luck with him wherever he goes. Recently some people helped me out. Now I want to pay it forward in a small way, so I am going to donate $50 to Netroots For The Troops. I hope you will contribute too if you can.
I haven't seen Mike since he went off to basic training over a month ago. If I can I want to go to Georgia later this summer to see him graduate. Mike doesn't have a big family and neither do I so I want to be as supportive of my friend as I can because I see us as family, one big extended family, and a family is supposed to take care of our own.
So I am making this small contribution with the hope that it does someone some good, that I may bring some small relief to someone else in need. I am my brother's keeper.
Love to one and all . . .
Netroots For The Troops
Netroots For The Troops® is raising funds to send Care Packages to our soldiers stationed overseas.
We are asking all of you to support our efforts and to also make a contribution for this worthwhile cause.
Over the years, many soldiers have sent letters to express their appreciation for these Care Packages and even posted thanks at Daily Kos
It was in the middle six months of my assignment in Afghanistan that the packages started arriving. I received an array of things from them… letters, candy, toothpaste, floss, baby wipes, razors, food, socks, books, dvd’s. The list could go on and on. It was amazing. Netroots for the Troops was always there... The packages were a reminder that our country knows about our fight. Every day, because of their support, I knew that if it was going to be my last day, I would be remembered and I would be honored.
Please make a donation HERE. Thank you from the entire 2012 NFTT Team.
Netroots For The Troops® is a project of Netroots for the Troops, Inc., a Virginia non-profit corporation. The NFTT diaries are a way for the Daily Kos community to support the troops in Afghanistan. We send them packages of items they might not otherwise receive through the normal military process but that they find useful. This is a non-political diary. While we understand there are differing views on the wars and the warriors, the site gives plenty of opportunity to express those views elsewhere. Furthermore, we would hope that users do not engage with those that attempt to hijack or otherwise disrupt these diaries.
We appreciate your understanding and support. Thanks!
