UFO: Unfinished Objects. Projects that have hit a barrier or seeming dead end, or become boring.
On April 1, I shared my knitting UFO problem. Today I am going to share an update of my progress, which I am quite proud of.
What Are You Working On is a community diary series for all things crafty and artsy, in a variety of mediums and techniques.
You may volunteer to guest host by joining this yahoo group, which I check from time to time. Also by joining this group, you will receive one email a week when the diary is posted. You may also volunteer to host by posting a comment in this diary.
If you click on the WAYWO group, there is a box for the group about 4 boxes down on the right hand side. If you click on the heart in this box, you will "follow" this group and the diary will appear in your "stream."
I think I am starting more projects than my initial rules allow for. Oh noes! I am finishing them, however.
I will share photos of all the finishes, and then a few details on a couple of projects.
Finished: Drop Stitch Scarf:
Needs to be washed, blocked, and photo'd, then given away.
Finished: Garter Stitch Loop Through Scarf
Needs ends woven in, washing, blocking. This one is for ME! The row counter was very helpful and the knitting went quickly once the project was re-habbed.
Finished: Slip Stitch Hat
It is ready to ship to the person for whom it was knitted. ?grammar?
^Those are the 3 items from my last diary on this topic.
Started and Finished: Easter Cowl
My daughter was disappointed we did not have matching Easter outfits this year. She asked for an accessory, so I found a pattern, modified it for her small size, and used the colors of my dress (turquoise), her dress (yellow) and her brother's shirt (lavender) in Red Heart SuperSaver (because it had the best colors).
Started & In Progress: Aero Shawl
This is one of the parallelogram "wings" on the V-shaped shawl. There's over 18,000 stitches and it is heavy. I am going to knit the triangular wedge in the middle next, and I am not sure about knitting the other wing while it is hot.
Started and almost finished: Big Swatch for Unknown Purpose
I've been reading stitch dictionaries (knitting geek). So my daughter has been looking at them too. She prefers the color photos in the Vogue books over the Walker guides. I mostly get them from the library. She selected one stitch pattern and asked for a hankerchief-sized swatch. This is a Right-Twist, and the first time I have twisted (although I have extensive cable experience). Here is my copy of the instructions with notes for design and stuff. I started one version without a selvage edge (plain stitches on the vertical edges) and it was a disaster, and I kept getting lost as to what row I was on.
I started over, using 3 knit stitches at the beginning and ending of each row for a garter stitch border, vertical only. I also put a split ring marker on the 8th row when I finished each one. I found it extraordinarily difficult to count rows through the twists and the stitch marker helped a great deal.
How to Right Twist:
Put the next three stitches on a cable needle. Hold in the back, the cable needle is only in the front in this photo so you can see it!
Knit the next stitch from the left needle - this will kind of get a big tug. Then put the left-most two stitches from the cable needle back onto the left needle. In this case, I purled those two stitches. Here is a photo having knitted the "tuggy" stitch, and purled one stitch:
After the second purl stitch, I knitted the remaining stitch from the cable needle, which also needed a bit of a tug:
Here are the stitches immediately after the twist, they are a bit distorted:
They will even out after the 3 rows of plain knitting, before the next twist row. It is pattern 176 in Vogue Stitchionary 1 or 2. I think I have 2 repeats of the 8 pattern rows left, then I will knit the first three plain rows again. My daughter says she wants to put her treasures on it. I am not sure what that means. Maybe it will line a box.
Old UFO still not finished: Leaf Lace Handwarmer
I'm still struggling with this. I can't really knit on it in public, or while I'm waiting for the kids to get done w/ after school stuff. I can't seem to find the right time to plow through it. If the first one wasn't already finished, I might abandon the whole thing.
When I finish the Pink Square of Mystery, and the second Handwarmer, I will start a new project, and move 2-3 old ones into my working bag.
The next new project is the ">Sundance Square Pencil Skirt from the summer Knitscene. I love the designer Sarah Wilson and her wonderful attitude. I have hemp yarn in burgundy, and it will NOT be done before NN12 ;-)
Old projects to be rehabbed will include The Sock and the Knitted Cat. There are also two toys and a baby sweater waiting. The golden shawl needs major help. And I will rehab it last, as a marker of my progress (more deets later).
New projects waiting for me include a tie for my son (he's in between kid ties and grown up ties)(and i've knitted too many things for my daughter), a small scarf for a kos-friend, and a nearly endless series of shawls.
