Ezra Klein has a great post up now about Republicans and the Dream Act.
He concludes with the following:
When Democrats endorse ideas Republican pioneered, that doesn't lead to bipartisanship. When they endorse ideas Republicans currently support, that doesn't lead to bipartisanship. And when they act on their own, thatâs too partisan.
So what, exactly, are they supposed to do?
Even though it is technically posing a question, that closing says so much. No matter what President Obama and Democrats try to do, no matter how helpful it is, no matter how much sense it makes, the Republicans will fight them. What kind of odds are those that anything can get done? Why stop doing the right thing just because the opposing party is currently completely unreasonable.
So what are they supposed to do? I think it is an good question, and I certainly don't have an answer for it, but I am curious to hear what others think. Is there a solution?
