Regarding today's Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare), Michele Bachmann said: "We will never be the same if this ruling is allowed to stand. The good thing about America, is that the Supreme Court isn't the final word on the laws we live under."
Oh, dear God. She never took Civics in 6th grade. Or much other American history or government. The Supreme Court's primary purpose is to decide if laws are kosher or not. They are the final word. If the US or a state congress passed a law, in 2012, saying that no Irishmen (or some other particular lineage) could own firearms, they would overturn it. Same as with a hypothetical law saying women can't drive, even if passed by 100% of a state's legislature.
That's one of the greatest things about our country: There is no "majority rule." Doing regular stuff can pass (somewhat easily). Doing really stupid, or really great things, takes a lot of work. We get it done sometimes, like today, and 2 years ago when the bill was passed. But a simple majority can't overturn those accomplishments a few years later- this is the beauty of the Constitution: Protection of the minority.
Now, it's more likely that Bachmann is just a stupid public speaker and going for equally stupid sound bytes, and that she really meant to say either: The Congress can undo this law (but can't make it unconstitutional - Congress can't do that); or a Supreme Court in the future can change its mind (which it can do, particularly with new justices).
But what she said, her total lack of understanding of the three branches of government, should at least make her have to take a citizenship exam in order to retain her House seat.
(And that should be a requirement for presidential hopefuls, too- like Mittens, who thinks he can "repeal" the healthcare act in the first day, if he's elected. Um- it would take new legislation, dude. And we've seen how good the GOP-led Congress is at getting anything passed.)
Oh- and the laughter continues- both with those GOPers who think they can get rid of Chief Justice John Roberts (impeachment would require the Senate, which is controlled by Dems), ... and those who have said they want to move to Canada because the new public healthcare system in the US is horrible.... these are people who know very little about Canada.
