The neoconservative ideology is truly amazing. It is also unbelievable. After the Iraq disaster, after the indefinite war in Afghanistan, they want another war. In Syria apparently.
John McCain today:U.S. leadership on Syria "shameful and disgraceful"
From the link above:
"The United States of America's performance so far has been shameful and disgraceful," he said. "The President of the United States should be speaking out for the people of Syria."
"I am confident that if we overthrow Bashar al-Assad the people of Syria will do exactly what the Libyan people did yesterday and that is vote for a democratic and freely-elected government."
McCain argued strongly on CBS Face the Nation that the US should arm the Syria rebels and support them to overthrow the Syrian regime.
So, it seems that we have now an escalating pressure from the neoconservatives to intervene in Syria. A situation very reminiscent to the intervention in Libya over a year ago, when John McCain and Joe Liebernan were initially asking the Obama administration to arm the Libyan rebels.
Of course, a major difference in the 2 situations is that in Libya Gaddafi was isolated, while in Syria Assad has the strong support and backing of Russia and China. Could a direct involvement of the US there risk an escalation and a conflict that could involve the Russians? How dangerous an intervention there would be in defiance of the positions or the Russians and the Chinese?
And, of course, the question remains. How insane is the neoconservative ideology? After so many wars the last decade, how could they be pushing for another war?
