I know we've all been engaged in concern over the economy, the President's own weaknesses, the vitriole and energy on the extreme right, etc. But, seriously, I don't thing there has ever been a worse candidate for President than Mitt Romney, at least not in modern history.
Some in the media have compared him to John Kerry. Maybe in terms of the potential of the closeness of the contest? But John Kerry was ripped apart by Rove and Co. to eliminate one of his biggest political strengths by turning it into a weakness. The only political strength that Mitt Romney seems to have is that he is not President Obama.
Then some have compared him to Walter Mondale. He lost big - but he did so by being honest and forthright in his campaigning, and clinging to his convictions. Mitt Romney? Serial liar and empty suit.
So, with a month or so until the Republican convention, Romney is sputtering. Bain is a real problem for him. Not his being rich - there are lots of good people who are rich. It's what you do with it that counts, not that you have it.
And unless Mitt Romney can reinvent himself to show himself a good citizen, he looks like he really is a liar, and potentially a criminal.
So - what will they do? They'll announce his VP pick next week, they'll blow more cash on ads about what they perceive as our weaknesses - anything to distract, distract, distract.
But this is a serious and real issue that will never, ever leave Romney. It virtually guarantees he goes into the convention (and possibly even comes out of it behind).
What do we do? How do we make this damage more permanent? How do we knock him out of the fall campaign before it even starts?
Because the worst result of all won't be President Obama losing, it will be how we refused to leverage an honest and authentic issue and turn it into a Democratic landslide.
