The Inoculation Project celebrated its 200th funded project in a BIG way, inviting all of us in the Daily Kos community to join in a festive diary, funding three projects in one day and even adding a bonus project for celebrators. Kossack extraordinaire navajo pitched in and created a special avatar that can be uploaded at Donors Choose to alert that community to the existence of … well … Daily Kos—a proudly liberal community funding math and science projects in red states.
Teachers took notice as well:
Daily Kos' Inoculation Project contributors get a thank you—and acknowledgement—from a grateful teacher, just one of the many who've been helped by the group's 200 project fundings.
As
belinda said to me via email, there's a real ripple effect outside of Daily Kos at work with these school projects at Donors Choose: "We unleashed a big burst of donations that brought them most of the way there, and that pushed them onto DonorsChoose's 'urgent' list, which is a bit like the Rec List, where other donors saw them and finished them up."
So much win!
Other Positively Awesome Stuff I've run across at Daily Kos since last Saturday:
- Lo and behold the Daily Kos for What Ales Ya, AKA Friday Night Beer Blog, described by founder esquimaux as: For discussion of fine malt beverages, and brewing and drinking them. Not limited to Fridays. Cheers!
- A great, in-depth look at the cause—or causes—of schizophrenia by Hugh Jim Bissell.
- angelajean wrote Living Math: Not Just for Homeschoolers, a diary with great advice on how to incorporate math into every-day games and activities so your kids will not just learn math, they'll like it.
- Self-described "binge poet" revbludge came up with amusing, amazing lyrics to HAIRSPREE: The Mitt Romney Musical. Now all we need is another Kossack to step in and write the music!
- navajo has started a series, New Day, kind of a happy open thread way to get your morning going and have some discussion. Very cool and community-building. Drop in! It's a great addition to J-Town in the mornings, a great, long-running AM gathering thread created by Jan F. Two great sub-communities to share your morning cup of coffee.
- Seasonal produce awesomeness! The ins, the outs, the science of, the stories behind …. drum roll … heirloom tomatoes! Yes! By Keith930.
- Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah … How can you resist a diary entitled, Of Volatire, Steampunk and Rock & Roll? Check out Purple Priestess as she riffs on Candide and the lyrics of the classic band, Rush.
- Of cartograms, electoral maps and peep shows, oh, my! Jeffrey L Albertson brings more Electoral College Map Porn in cool explanations of different types of cartograms and their uses for envisioning elections in different ways.
- Another interesting group I ran across: The Genealogy and Family History Community. Group description:
We are a Group interested in the research, analysis and discussion of genealogy and family histories, our own and others. We invite all those who desire guidance in getting started in their research, those who are looking for suggestions for getting past a problem in their on-going projects (brick walls), those willing to share resources, or those who simply want to talk about their projects (and we KNOW how family historians love to talk about their projects).
raina this week had a fascinating collection of tintype photos she was requesting Kossack help with—go give your best estimate on the date of these!
Please, fellow Orangers, share any Positively Awesome Stuff you ran across this week at Daily Kos ... we want to flaunt it!
