I must tell you; even though I’m a liberal I do not support abortion. I’ll be clear; I don’t support the criminalization of abortion or even for government to get involved with abortion. What I do support is the government helping to end abortion in a way that will not compromise the rights of women and does not enforce edicts upon the physicians who perform abortions.
Government can create programs that can help women make better choices and find ways to make it much less expensive to adopt children.
I don’t believe government at any time should enforce laws upon women who find themselves in a bad situation but instead find ways to keep women from finding themselves in that bad situation.
We should encourage teens to use protection if they’re going to make bad decisions. Parents need to understand that teens are experiencing the same thing they did when they were teens – those kinds of things never change from generation to generation.
Sexual attraction is a very powerful force in a teen’s life. It’s about discovery; I speak from my own experience.
I’m certainly not an expert but I believe the best thing we can do for teens as parents is to teach them to make the right decisions; how a parent does that is up to their own knowledge.
Abortion is going to go on for probably many more decades, but we could be working toward a nation that no longer needs abortion, either through education or through our support of programs that help young women to make better choices in their lives.
Those who oppose abortion strongly must realize, they will be much more successful if they put forth more endeavors to encourage adoptions and other methods, other than imposing laws upon other Americans and violating the civil rights of millions of women.
I will always hold that pregnancy not only has to do with the unborn fetus but also the woman. As long as a woman’s body is involved, she has the right to decide what to do with that body, as she will also be morally responsible what she does with it too. But it is her body and government has no right to tell her otherwise.
What we must do is move toward a better solution for both sides. I don’t know all the answers myself. I’m also not a woman and women should have a great deal to say in what happens with women in this country, though it is concerning contraception or abortions or women’s rights in the workplace.
I, like a lot of Democrats don’t like abortion at all, but there is a difference in how I feel and how Republicans feel who oppose abortion; I don’t want government involved enforcing anti-abortion and they do.
Those who are pro-life should also realize that if somehow they successfully manage to overturn Roe vs. Wade and end legal abortion in this country, they will not end abortion. Instead they will drive it to the streets and to back-room tables with abortion providers untrained, presenting a danger to the health of many desperate young women.
We don’t want to go back to an era that drove women to risk their health and cause so much misery. We want to move forward to a better world for us all. I believe if both sides will work together toward the same goal; ending abortion or at least minimize it so that not so many abortions are performed in this country, we can find solutions that will not only solve the abortion question, but end a long battle between two very passionate sides.
We can find middle ground if both sides are willing to compromise and look for comprehensive solutions without government intrusion.
Women seek abortions for different reasons. Here are a few statistics of why women seek abortion:
1.
Birth control (contraceptive) failure. Over half of all women who have an abortion used a contraceptive method during the month they became pregnant.
2
2. Inability to support or care for a child
3. To end an unwanted
pregnancy.
4. To prevent the birth of a child with
birth defects or severe medical problems. Such defects are often unknown until routine second-trimester tests are done.
5. Pregnancy resulting from rape or incest.
6. Physical or mental conditions that endanger the woman's health if the pregnancy is continued.
I believe if we will focus on the reasons women have abortions and find solutions to at least some of those issues, and then we will come closer to lessening the number of abortions performed in this country.
Let’s take it one step at a time and protect both the woman’s right and the unborn fetus at the same time, and then we will have moved one step in the right direction.
