Woah!
On the liberal media outlet Fixxed News, long time liberal columnist Bill Kristol desperately implored Mitt Romney to release his tax returns, saying "it's crazy" to think you can get away with hiding his tax returns.
Now, THAT'S gonna leave a mark.
Making thinks even worse, a stunned and bewildered George Will joined the firestorm engulfing the Romney candidacy, saying voters will assume that Romney must be something really bad in those tax returns.
He's right.
This has all the markings of Nixon covering up Watergate. During Watergate, Nixon could have cleared up all speculation and ended the scandal by releasing the tape recordings. Nixon steadfastly refused. The more Nixon dug in his heels, the more it convinced the public that Nixon must have been involved in the break-in and/or cover-up.
Similarly Romney could end this scandal right now by releasing his returns. By adamantly refusing to do so will only lead the public to concluded that he's hiding something lethal, something damning.
Like Nixon, Romney is playing for time. Nixon refused to release the tapes hoping he string out the investigation to the end of his term and avoid being the first president to resign from office.
Romney is also playing for time, hoping to avoid being the first presidential candidate who has to withdraw form the ticket.
At this point Romney's candidacy is so radioactive, and the firestorm is so intense, I doubt anyone will accept his offer to join the ticket. Really, who would buy a ticket for the Titanic after it hit the iceberg.
