TODAY'S COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION FEATURE:
Where were you born and how close do you live from there now?
I was born in Vernal, Utah back in the mid 50s.
Vernal, Uintah County's largest city, is located in eastern Utah near the Colorado State Line, and 175 miles east of Salt Lake City. Vernal lies in Ashley Valley, named in honor of William H. Ashley, an early fur trader who entered this area in 1825 by floating down the Green River in a bull boat made of animal hides. Vernal, unlike the majority of Utah towns, was not settled initially by Mormon pioneers. Brigham Young sent a scouting party to Uinta Basin in 1861 and received word back the area was good for nothing but nomad purposes, hunting grounds for Indians and "to hold the world together." That same year, President Abraham Lincoln set the area aside as the Uintah Indian Reservation. Captain Pardon Dodds was appointed Indian agent for this reservation.
The population was 9,089 at the 2010 census.
I found three photos that capture my memories of the rural place. (One is in my tip jar.)
This is how I remember it as small child.
It's a very rural place.
We moved to Richfield, Utah when I was two. I have lots of great memories of my birth place. Particularly of visiting during the summers to play with my many cousins who still lived there. One of my favorite memories from early grade school is being in the truck with my dad and waking up to a sunrise as we drove into Vernal. If I Had a Hammer was playing on the radio. I always think of that moment when I hear that terrific song. I was so excited to see my cousins!
As many of you know, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area now. That's 900 miles away. I only return to Vernal for funerals now.

COMMUNITY BUILDING UPDATES:
Let's build communities!
Every region needs a meat-space community like SFKossacks.
We take care of each other in real life.
I urge YOU to take the lead and organize one in your region.
Please tell us about it if you do and I'm here for advice.

Our last-minute SFKossack event has shaped up quite nicely. Steveningen works at the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo. His facility will cater the event. Steven and I will cover this cost for all of you. We will need help with wine and beer.
Transportation Instructions:
Getting to Vallejo from the City is done one of two ways. There is the ferry and accompanying bus lines that run from the Ferry Building. Plan an hour but a very very pleasant ride.
There is BART to El Cerrito Del Norte station and a bus that runs every twenty minutes to Vallejo which is about an additional 15 minute ride.
For people relying on public transportation to get to the campus, Brian and I could certainly meet people and drive them to campus and take them back to the terminal.
There should be enough drivers going who can stop by any of the terminals and pick people up.
Other options are to take BART to stations near drivers' homes where you can be picked up.
It is noted if you don't have a car, we'll get you there. Tell us in the comments what your needs are.
