Good Evening, Kossacks, and welcome to Wednesday's edition of Obama Nightly News.
Welcome !!! The purpose of this regular series is to promote enthusiasm and action among Daily Kos members. Willard will likely outraise President Obama. However, we believe that we can still win if (1) we can remain competitive financially and (2) we volunteer more (GOTV, canvassing, phonebanking, LTE, ...) .
This has not been a good week for Team Romney, and we have all enjoyed a bit of well-earned schadenfreude. What is Romney hiding in his past tax returns? Did he pay no or almost no taxes in 2009? What about those off-shore bank accounts? What was the nature of Romney's retirement settlement with Bain Capital? And even, when did he actually retire from Bain? It has gotten so bad that even Republicans from Haley Barbour to David Frum are calling for Romney to release his returns.
We have also learned some new phrases this week. It now appears that although Romney left Bain in the early 2000s, he "retroactively retired" in 1999. Say what?
The worst, however, has been Team Romney's attempt to paint our President as somehow foreign and un-American. Unfortunately, the Republicans brought out everyone's crazy uncle, former governor John Sununu, as their attack dog. Even overlooking the fact that Sununu was born in Cuba!, he also left the Bush I administration in disgrace. He used government planes to go on ski weekends and even to visit his dentist in Boston.
Even though it has been a very bad week for Romneyland, we cannot let up. We need to re-elect our president and to give him a more Democratic and progressive congress. The one advantage that Romney has is tons and tons of money. We need to counteract that with hard work and small donations.
Please follow me below the colonial cheese doodle where I will show you some pictures of President Obama engaged in un-American activities like watching basketball and ordering 5-way chili. I will then make a couple suggestions about what you can do to help re-elect our president and to elect a more Democratic congress.
Here is our president ordering chili in Cincinnati. Chili, including 5-way chili with chili, spaghetti, cheese, onions, and beans is a local specialty:

Here are President Obama and Vice President Biden at the USA vs. Brazil basketball game. The President and Mrs. Obama later appeared on the "kiss cam", clearly an un-American activity (photo source):
And here is the President calling for the continuation of the tax cuts on incomes of less that $250K per year:

So what can you do (without spending a lot of money) to help re-elect the Obama/Biden team and to elect a more progressive congress?
1. Make sure that your family and your Democratic friends have appropriate voter ID. If you have an elderly relative who no longer drives, volunteer to take him or her to the DMV. If their mobility is restricted, help them apply for an absentee ballot. Dad and I have lived in NJ for almost 30 years, but our adult children vote in CA, MA, and PA. The PA voter is a college student who does not drive, but we have made sure that he has the appropriate picture ID.
2. Don't forget the down-ticket races. Many of the senators who were elected in the Democratic wave in 2006, including Sens. Tester, McCaskill, Bill Nelson of FL, and Sherrod Brown, are facing re-election this year. Not all of these candidates are perfect, but they are far better than their Republican rivals.
In NJ, we have the opportunity to re-elect Se. Bob Menendez. (As an aside, many people do not know that NJ is home to the largest Cuban-American community outside South Florida.) Menendez has worked hard to make liberal and progressive New Jerseyans proud. Earlier this month, he was named one of the 11 best senators for gay rights. Our senior senator, Frank Lautenberg, was also on the list. Here is a link to the Menendez campaign. You can volunteer to do simple things like displaying a lawn sign. Every little bit helps.
Here's to re-electing our president and electing a Democratic House and Senate.
