Numbers behind Pa. voter-ID law debated in court
Specifically: how many Pennsylvania voters do not have acceptable forms of photo ID to vote under the new law - and why estimates of that number have varied so widely since the law was moving through the legislature in March. In court Thursday, a University of Washington political scientist with extensive background in polling testified that his survey found that more than one million registered voters, or 12.7 percent, lacked valid identification to vote.
Georgia Prisoners’ Hunger Strike at Critical Stage
"The United States is the world's first prison state. We lock up more people for longer and for less than anyone else does on this planet. African Americans, who are one-eighth of the nation's population, make up over 40 percent of this nation's prisoners. Latinos, who are another one-eighth, make up an additional 30 percent, and their numbers are climbing. So that means that between blacks and Latinos, who make up a quarter of the nation's population, are three-quarters of its prisoners. In Georgia we have 1 in 13 adults who are either in prison, out on bail, or on parole, on bond, or some form of court supervision. That's the highest number of any state in the union, 1 in 13 adults."
Ecuador Says Assange Extradition to US Would be 'Evil' - Asylum decision to come 'after Olympics' The Ecuadorean government has been working to ensure WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is not extradited to the US and this week went so far as to call such a possibility 'evil'. "In legal terms … the evil that Ecuador wishes to prevent is the extradition [of Assange] to the US. Now if there are ways and means of that being tied down, I think that would be a just solution," stated the senior legal adviser to the country's embassy in London, where Assange has been staying in a bid to gain political asylum in Ecuador. ... Diplomats for Ecuador said they have taken part in numerous diplomatic talks with the Swedish and UK governments, seeking to guarantee that Assange will not be extradited to the US after the completion of legal proceedings in Sweden.
Your Phone, the Snitch IMSI, which stands for the dull and deceptively innocuous-sounding “International Mobile Subscriber Identity,” acts as a mobile phone tower that tricks cellphones into sending data to it instead of a nearby tower. Such “man-in-the- middle” attacks defy detection, usually occurring without the caller’s knowledge. Police departments say they do not need warrants to use IMSI catchers. A case on the matter is working its way through the courts. The FBI already uses the device. Except for turning your cellphone off, there appears at the moment to be no way to shield yourself from such attacks.
NJ troopers face charges in 100-mph caravan escort
TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey state troopers face criminal charges and disciplinary action for their roles in the high-speed escort of caravans of luxury cars, including a 100 mph trip down the Garden State Parkway in March that alarmed other motorists, state officials said. [ ... ] Their investigation focused on the spring incident and a high-speed escort in 2010 that was captured in an amateur video. [ ... ] Nassry's attorney said he expected the criminal charges to be related to statements made about whether the Ferraris, Lamborghinis and other high-performance cars had their license plates taped over. Nassry has denied knowing anything about plates being taped over. The sergeant agreed to participate in the escort because of his friendship with Brandon Jacobs, a former member of the New York Giants, now with the San Francisco 49ers, who was part of the caravan, said Nassry's attorney, Charles Sciarra.
Tens of Thousands of Federal Employees to Get Layoff Notices Right Before Election
The fight over the automatic trigger cuts, which will take place at the end of the year without Congressional action, took an interesting turn this week. The Senate passed a bill that will force the Obama Administration to provide details on how they will implement the cuts. This bill has already passed the House with a broad majority, and the President has indicated that he will sign it. But politically, it puts him – and Congress – in some trouble. [ ... ] As Dave Weigel notes, this will be spun as Obama’s job cuts, particularly when applied to the defense sector. Both parties voted for the Budget Control Act, which created the process that led to these cuts. But the name on the masthead of the plan for the cuts will be the Office of Management and Budget, and Republicans in particular will act like the directive comes entirely from them, rather than an agreed-to process voted on and passed by Congress.
