I am not sure what has brought this on, though I am sure it has something to do with recent wins for LGBT rights and the PR Nightmares of a certain company based here in Georgia. But I have heard of three couples in the past two days who have gotten calls from BCBS of Georgia to inform them that their policy had been canceled and their money was being refunded.
The reason given to one of the individuals, after a heated argument with the person on the phone was because BCBS of Georgia doesn't cover same sex couples. The hilarity is below the orange curly cue.
Of the three couples, none of them were actually same sex couples.
The first couple was named Jan & Melissa. Jan (pronounced Yahn), a German immigrant, was not surprised to hear his first name mispronounced, but was rather surprised to hear the news that he was a lesbian. The second couple (Aaron & Jamie) were also very surprised that even though Jamie checked the "F" box on the form, BCBS had magically transmogrified her into a gay man. And you can see where this is going.
What is most hilarious about this is that I know actual gay domestic partners in Georgia that work for a Fortune 500 company, who have coverage with BCBS of Georgia through that company... who have not received any scary phone calls from BCBS cancelling their policy, yet. These heterosexual couples with androgynous names work for smaller companies (read: they are not as profitable), so they are getting targeted for harassment.
It makes one wonder why BCBS is unevenly applying their policies on same-sex couples (which are not spelled out anywhere on their web site that I can locate). It is also curious why they are casting such a wide net in order to purge their rolls of the gay that they are canceling the policies of heterosexual couples.
Is this actually a move on the part of the corporate entity to enforce policy, or is some busy body exercising their moral imperative to oppress all them sinners?
