In today's NY Times Op-Ed, Charles Blow has written an account of the night Chavis Carter was said to have committed suicide in a police car. He had been searched twice and had a quantity of marijuana that was estimated to be worth $10.
The column can be found here. It is a must-read for anyone concerned about the welfare of African-American youth in this country.
Blow writes:
"Police say he committed suicide with a hidden gun while handcuffed in the back of a police cruiser. According to a local CBS News report, his mother was told that he shot himself in the right temple, but she claims that Chavis was left-handed."
What have we come to? How bad does this have to get before we say enough! I cannot imagine the agony of worry of the parents of a young African-American man or even child.
