Mitt Romney is in danger of inheriting a campaign-defining meme, and Rush doesn't like it.
A Google search of "Romney Hood" gives a quarter of a million hits, with nearly fifteen thousand of these appearing in Google's news results.
In comparison, "Governor Etch-a-sketch" gives only 21,000 Google hits, with a paltry 4 results appearing in Google news.
As just one example,
Business Insider has a story under the headline,
Rush Limbaugh Is Freaking Out About Obama's 'Romney Hood' Comment. Arguing that Robin Hood was a Tea Party type, Rush believes the mythic archer was
anti-government, moreso than
a bandit robbing the rich. To be sure, taxes on the poor were a concern in many versions of the Robin Hood story.
But Rush's chauvinism obscures even his more salient observations. The king of talk radio couldn't resist throwing in a sexist remark about Robin Hood taking the money back to Maid Marian "so she would put out". Behold the Rush trademark: always find the most depraved take on any topic.
But sometimes Rush's debauchery backfires. The nine hours of air time that Rush invested in attacks on Sandra Fluke made her a sympathetic champion of women's rights, and caused literally tens of thousands to tweet, send emails, or get active in groups like Flush Rush on Facebook, and more recently, in StopRush. Their targets in most cases have been the very companies that make the Rush Limbaugh Show possible. Many of these activists have reported that they had never before thought about activism. El Rushbo has always been great at stirring things up.
But maybe not quite so much any more. Some Flush Rushers who monitor Rush every day have noticed that Rush now tends to pull his punches a bit, particularly when it comes to his once favorite target, Michelle Obama. Apparently losing millions of advertising dollars has forced a bit of caution on right wing shock jockery.
Mysterious, dark, and even bizarre conspiracy theories have been circulated about Sandra Fluke – did you hear the one that she adopted the name "Fluke" to confuse conservatives about her alleged Democratic Party credentials? Well, some of those allegations appear to be coming true – not in secret, but in the bright, shiny spotlight of the news cycle. Today (Wednesday), Sandra Fluke will join President Obama on the campaign trail in Denver. Once again, we can thank Rush.

[excerpt] "Obama's out there today, he's at a fundraiser, and guess who is introducing him?" [Rush Limbaugh] said. "Well-known contraception expert Sandra Fluke."
He implied that he deserved credit for bringing Fluke further into the public eye by calling her a "slut" and a "prostitute."
"When I say the name Sandra Fluke, what's the first thing that pops into your mind?" he said. "The first thing that comes up is my name! ... I should be getting a finder's fee."
Replying to a question from his producer Bo Snerdley, he added, "I don't know if they give out condoms at Obama's fundraisers," a clear reference to Fluke's birth control advocacy.
