U.S. calls for ‘flexibility’ on climate change
The United States ran into crossfire on Wednesday after it called for “flexibility” in climate talks, even if this approach could not guarantee meeting the UN’s target on global warming.
Europe demanded that the two-degree-Celsius (3.6-degree-Fahrenheit) objective set at the Copenhagen summit in 2009 be honoured while small island states accused Washington of dangerous backsliding.
The skirmishes came ahead of a new talks for a global treaty to roll back greenhouse-gas emissions which stoke atmospheric warming and damage Earth’s fragile climate system.
Progressive Group Calls On Obama To Take Down Pro-Coal Ad
The Obama campaign is running a virulently pro-coal ad in Ohio coal country that attacks Mitt Romney for his past coal industry criticisms. ... On Wednesday the progressive group Credo Action called on Obama to take down the ad, launching a web petition pressuring the president’s campaign to drop the coal attacks on Romney. ...
The coal fight in both instances exposed divides in the Democratic coalition. Thousands of UK Workers 'Blacklisted' Over Political Views
The surveillance and blacklisting of thousands of workers, including some suspected by construction companies of being left-wing troublemakers, should be immediately investigated by the privacy watchdog, it was urged last night.
More than 40 major firms referred to the secret database, which listed thousands of people's details, including their involvement in union activity, before hiring staff. Workers who were on the list allege they were deprived of their livelihoods as a result of their inclusion, with supporters claiming their human rights have been breached. ...
The database was seized three years ago and Ian Kerr, who had operated it, was fined £5,000. Invoices were discovered showing that 44 companies had paid to see the names on the list. ...
An official from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) told the industrial tribunal of a person who had been blacklisted that he believed the information on the database could only have been supplied by the police or the security services.
Corporate Lobbyists Threaten Democracy
In Europe, the head of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, is facing a formal inquiry by the European Union (EU) ombudsman because of his membership in a well-known international banking lobby group.
On Jul. 24, the ombudsman’s office announced that it was launching the investigation following allegations that Draghi’s membership in the so-called Group of 30 “is incompatible with the independence, reputation and integrity of the ECB”. ...
European activists and analysts have been growing more anxious about the influence of private investment banks on public financial policies, especially as the European sovereign debt continues to spiral out of control. ... Draghi’s participation “in a closed, club-like structure with representatives from big international private banks could damage the integrity and reputation of the ECB.”
