A new ABC NEWS/WASHINGTON POST POLL out today shows Romney's favorability slipping even more.
Forty percent of Americans overall view Romney favorably, 49 percent unfavorably – leaving him underwater, at least numerically, in 10 straight ABC/Post polls this year. A new high of 30 percent now see him “strongly” unfavorably, nearly double his strongly favorable score.
What's interesting about this is that the more people get to know him the less they like him. In September, 37% of those polled had not made up their minds about him. At that time, he was at 33% favorable and 31% unfavorable. The other 37% had not yet formed an opinion.
Flash forward to this week and only 11% of those polled have not made up their minds. Among the ~26% that did, he gained 7 points in favorability and 18 points in unfavorability. In otherwords, close to 70% of people who have made up their minds about him in the last 10 months have decided they do not like him.
If this trend continues, by November he could hit as high as 56% unfavorable.
By contrast, President Obama is at 53% favorable and 43% unfavorable. In September, when he was at 47% favorable and 46% unfavorable, only 7% had no opinion. Now, only 4% say they don't hold an opinion of him, with a gain of 7 in favorability and a reduction of 3% in unfavorability. Not only is the President picking up from the previously undecideds, he's also changing people's opinions, something Romney has failed to do.
