The U.S. Census Clock crossed 314,159,265 today reports, Bonnie Kavoussi
in The U.S. population has reached a nerdy and delightful milestone.
Shortly after 2:29 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, the U.S. population was exactly 314,159,265, or Pi (π) times 100 million, the U.S. Census Bureau reports.
Pi (π) is a unique number in multiple ways. For one, it is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. It is also an irrational number, meaning it goes on forever without ever repeating itself. Are you remembering how much you loved geometry class? You can check out Pi to one million places here.
The US Census clock is
here where some of the first digits are still consistent with Pi.
It is not obvious to me, yet, how this helps us elect "more and better Democrats," but I thought I should report it anyway. Perhaps, a clever Kossack can clue us in. Maybe, more Democrats are likely to know what Pi is, and are more likely to support educational programs in math and science so we could use this knowledge to send secret codes to campaign volunteers?
However, it turns out, this is a lotta of Pi.
4:22 PM PT: Commenters are pointing out that my concern about whether or not this knowledge of Pi helps us elect more and better Democrats is "irrational" give this sites great love of Pie.
I'm working on a poll that can help settle this matter.
What are you thoughts on Pi?
It's irrational to think about Pi on a political site, but we are going to do it anyway so might as well have fun doing it.
Pie
3.1415 * 100 million is a lot of Pie
I'm hungry for Pie.
How can we divide a Pie into Pi equal proportions if Pi is not an integer?
