This was too good not to share. Mitt Romney apparently graced the Queen City of Charlotte with his presence today. We commoners were informed retroactively.
When then-Senator Obama came here in 2008, he held his campaign rally in the sports arena at Central Piedmont Community College. My awesome boss gave me a ticket and the afternoon off and I waited in line for hours with thousands of fired-up people. The soon-to-be President was electrifying. When NC turned blue by a 0.3% margin that November, I taped a big DID! over the "Yes We Can" sticker on my car.
Four years later, here comes the Barber of Cranbrook, playing defense. None of that rabble-rousing, line-standing, community college crowd for him! Nope, Mitt took his act straight to the Duke Mansion.
Assembled there for a 1:00pm luncheon was a who's who of Really Rich People. People like Bruton Smith, Owner/CEO of Charlotte Motor Speedway and Robert Pittenger, investor and serial GOP tool. The Charlotte Observer article doesn't comment on the haul, which is probably just as well.
The only thing missing? The Candidate. This is how Willard thanked his closest circle of Charlotte-based gazillionaire donors, not to mention the hardworking staff at the (nonprofit) Duke Mansion that made the whole thing happen.
Those who gathered to meet with the Republican Party’s presidential candidate had to wait. The event was scheduled for 1 p.m., but Romney didn’t arrive until a few minutes after 2 p.m.
WTF? I knew he was an inconsiderate prick, but who stands up Bruton Smith for an hour and change? This is the South. No one's that tone-deaf, are they?
At least Bruton got some face time, though. The press was SOL:
Romney’s afternoon appearance in Charlotte was preceded by a Republican Party news conference, attended by a number of local GOP officials but not the candidate.
Let me guess ... exhaustion? The man can't make it to lunch before 2:00pm and he wants to be Commander in Chief? The whole Observer article is worth a read.
NC is very much in play. Happy belated birthday Larry Graham, and this one's for you, Team Rmoney!
