At the We Are Woman Rally yesterday in DC, I had the pleasure of hearing Wayne Powell speak.  Although, I live in a neighboring district to his 7th District in Virginia, I plan on supporting his campaign by volunteering and donating money.

http://www.powellforva.com/

Even if you do not live in Virginia, please check out his campaign site and consider supporting him in order to kick Cantor out of office.

Wayne Powell has a VERY good chance of winning between Cantor's approval rating in his district and Powell's bio, and everyone should could consider this a NATIONAL election!

Please excuse my lack of savvy on posting as I never have before although I'm a longtime reader.  I searched for diaries on dailykos on Wayne Powell and found two:  one by teacherken (I'm a big fan!) and another by JCWilmore that include links to Rachel Maddow and Ed Show interviews about Wayne's campaign, but they are both from July. (I'm not even sure how to properly link those diaries to mine, but I wanted to note them here!  My apologies.)

Since those two diaries are from July, I thought I would just make a quick post to bring this campaign to the dailykos community's attention and garner interest in the campaign.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

What about the Cook PVI there? Sometimes an incumbent's approval rating isn't worth a hill of beans if the incumbent is entrenched enough.

Believe me, I'd love to see Cantor swept away. Bachmann, Steve King, Allen West, and Paul Ryan are in semi-serious trouble in their districts too -- and their defeats would be savory. However, I haven't heard anything about Cantor's district being competitive.

    •  We should develop a consistent strategy that (8+ / 0-)

Cantor, Boehner, Ryan, Bachmann, etc. are always strongly challenged and forced to defend their seats.

In this case I  think Powell has a good chance. He would be a good rep. for that district and Cantor is a corrupt pig.
Cantor screwed up on a couple of things. Disaster relief funds, after Irene, for one thing, as I remember.
There should be a considerable female backlash against any gop in VA that still backs "Vaginal Probe" McConnell.

We need to fight for every vote, for every seat.
Otherwise we should just let Charley Cook and the other pollsters tell us who is going to run our country.

as barronthedem pointed out. You act like Cook is telling us how to run the country, but his index is simply an observation of reality. Partisan voters (voters who move the index in such a manner) don't care how corrupt Cantor is because they're partisan.

Does that mean I oppose a 50 state strategy? Absolutely not. I advocate giving every last Republican a run for his/her money. I'm simply gauging the realistic possibilities here. Bachmann, King, West, and Ryan are definitely in play based on PVI, polls, and fundraising progress of their opponents. I'd simply like to hear more about Wayne Powell regarding those factors.

        •  I understand, but what Dems should do, is (4+ / 0-)

right after the election if their challenger lost, get the local network back together and regroup and start thinking about the next race.
We're getting there, but because there's an evangelical religious/values voters/ antiabortion network in place for the gop base, I think they've got an advantage there.

Another difference in the dynamic this time is the Ryan vp nomination.
It's nationalizing the House contests, because of the light being shone on the Ryan budget.
Cantor may be back on his heels before this is over. If he's on defense, it may be very good for Powell.

    •  What about the Cook PVI there? (0+ / 0-)

Hickman polling shows Cantor's favorables at 37% in the District.  Having the national spotlight on the Majority Leader has exposed his seamier side and a lot of moderate Republicans and Independents aren't happy. 41% of VA's 7th District would vote to reelect and 43% would vote to replace. 59% want a Representative who will vote with the President at least some of the time. 68% of women prefer a candidate who is pro-choice, and with new stats that show 70% of declared 'pro-lifers' believe it should be a woman's choice, the percentage is likely higher than 68%.... All y'all know Cantor is not pro-choice, right?! With all the anti-women legislation handed down by McDonnell and his cronies in the General Assembly being protested in the District, coupled with Romney's choice of another Young Gun for VP, Powell supporters are feeling pret-ty good about his chances! In fact, we may be the little engine that can drive the train of enthusiasm this Democratic ticket needs!

but I gave $10 to Powell's campaign just to see Cantor's back going out the door. Hope VA kosacks will get in touch with their Dem county precinct chairman and get involved. Give a 1/2 day to a phone bank.

  •  VA #7 poll #s: (4+ / 0-)

The internals show that the 7th District doesn't think Cantor is too pretty...approval rating 37%, re-elect 41%, replace 43%, but the district is +12 Rs.

This from Wayne Powell's Dem strategist Dave Mudcat Saunders.

  •  Powell has a youtube campaign speech up. (5+ / 0-)

It needs to be edited (polished) and spread far and wide.

I live in VA-06 where Goodlette has a very comfortable and rarely contested seat.

Speaking as a veteran seeking assistance from Goodlatte's office I can tell you he is not interested in getting down in the dirt for veterans. His office will send a letter of inquiry to the VA and their involvement ends there. They send a form letter of inquiry on free postage and that ends their involvement in the matter as far as they are concerned. Never a follow up. Never a call back. No 'service' beyond mailing a form letter.

For those who don't know, it's the whiter and wealthier portions of Richmond, its western suburbs, and some rural territory to the north.  This was one of the first areas of Virginia to turn Republican.

I'd like to see polling from VA-3 and VA-05 as well ... hard to imagine Cantor going down while Randy Forbes and Robert Hurt survive.

    •  VA-3 is Bobby Scott's district. (0+ / 0-)

He'll win easily, as it's an overwhelmingly Democratic ("majority minority") district. Randy Forbes' district is VA-4. He's in a "safe" district, unfortunately. As for Hurt, he's got a strong opponent, Gen. John Douglass, in a district that we held (with Tom Perriello) from January 2009 until the 2010 Tea Party wipeout. Another "swing" district in Virginia is the 2nd, where Democrat Paul Hirschbiel is taking on Rep. Scott Rigell. Other than that, the districts are pretty much drawn for "incumbent protection."

  •  A Cantor guy just rang my doorbell (7+ / 0-)

By the time I got my barking dog (good girl!) stowed away so that I could answer the door, he had already moved on, but he left a brochure.  Of course, I immediately shredded it. ;-)

I've lived in Cantor's district for ten years, but I don't recall anyone going door to door for him before.  Could they be a little nervous this time?

  •  Cantor won't be defeated (0+ / 0-)

He has to much money and his district just won't elect a democrat. Powell can put a scare into him and embarrass him but beating him is a different story.
His district knows he is a loser but they are stuck with him. It would take a massive democratic wave to ever beat him.

Saunders, the veteran Virginia strategist famous for his appeals to rural voters, is in charge of Democrat Wayne Powell's bid to unseat Cantor. While Saunders has no problem ripping apart every aspect of the Republican Cantor's record and personality, the ratio between attacking Cantor and promoting his own client is oddly uneven.

In a July 26 op-ed he wrote for Huffington Post, Saunders unloaded on Cantor for his handling of the STOCK Act without touting Powell. Ten days earlier during an interview with Daily Caller, Saunders said Powell's name once in 7 minutes and 43 seconds.

On July 12 during an appearance on MSNBC, host Rachel Maddow mentioned Powell's name two times. Saunders said "Powell" once, while describing his candidate. Saunders's titles on the show: "Democratic Strategist"; "Longtime VA Dem Campaign Advisor"; and "Advising Rep. Cantor's (R-VA) Challenger".

Saunders gave Alan Colmes's radio show an 11-minute interview, his first appearance for Powell's campaign. He eviscerated Cantor for almost the entire program but only mentioning Powell's name four times, usually saying "we", "us" or "our" when referring to the Democrat's campaign.

Using pronouns -- or even an occasional "my guy" -- in lieu of Powell's name is actually a common trait for most Saunders interviews. A look at his Twitter feed also shows he's attacked Cantor far more times since June than he's promoted Powell, generally just re-tweeting Powell rather than touting his client directly.

This isn't to say that Ol' Mudcat's taking it easy on Cantor, referring to him as a "bought-and-paid-for crook," a "bought-and-paid-for bastard" and a "bought-and-paid-for degenerate." He often promotes "Cancantor.com", which is paid for by Powell's campaign, but not Powell's actual Web site.
