We all know that Republicans are working diligently to win a permanent majority by interfering with our voting process. Voter purges, reduced hours at the polls and voter ID laws are moving ahead at full speed. These efforts have been fought in court with mixed results while the traditional media pollutes the discourse with false balance.
We will lose this way. I think we need to reframe the issue in a way that doesn't put us on the defense but on the offense. Follow me below the squiggle for a brief diary explaining how change direction.
Many of us have long believed that election day should be a national holiday but the issue has never gained significant political traction and I suspect it never will. This is one of those occasions where if the people can lead, we can force the politicians to follow.
This election day we should have a national "sick day." The day should be a holiday anyway. Call in sick on election day. Ask your friends and family members to call in sick on election day.
Granted, employees in some sectors like law enforcement and medicine wouldn't be able to participate directly but they could still support others. Hell, wear a T-shirt that says "Super Tuesday Super Sickday."
We can do this. Hell, high school students have been doing "senior skip days" for decades. This can actually work and force the issue into the national debate.
