Archbishop Salvatore Cordileonea
Newly promoted Roman Catholic Archbishop was caught drunk driving Saturday.
From the San Francisco Chronicle:
The Rev. Salvatore Cordileone, a vigorous supporter of California's same-sex marriage ban, was taken into custody after being stopped early Saturday at a police checkpoint near the San Diego State University campus, said Detective Gary Hassen, a police spokesman. He declined to comment on whether Cordileone took a sobriety test or reveal his blood-alcohol content.
The stop was made at 12:26 a.m. on the outskirts of the campus, an area populated by college housing, modest restaurants and low-slung apartment buildings.
There was no record of Cordileone being in custody on Monday. The San Diego city attorney's office, which prosecutes misdemeanor DUI offenses, said it had not received a report on the arrest.
The San Francisco archdiocese did not immediately respond to phone and email messages seeking comment.
The priest was recently promoted to Archbishop, no doubt in part because he's got his papal priorities on straight,
unlike those misguided nuns.
From the Chronicle, July 27, 2012:
San Francisco's new archbishop has risen to the top of the Catholic hierarchy by tackling in the most strident terms the hot-button issues facing the church.
After California voters banned same-sex marriage in 2008, Salvatore Cordileone told a Catholic radio show that "the ultimate attack of the Evil One is the attack on marriage."
Organizers of Proposition 8 said Cordileone was key to getting the measure before voters.
"He was about as instrumental as anybody," said Frank Schubert, who ran the Prop. 8 campaign and has led similar campaigns in other states.
While some Catholic leaders appreciate Cordileone's defense of church values, others aren't so sure.
I'm certainly glad the good people of San Francisco have the good Rev. Salvatore Cordileone counseling them on "the ultimate attack of the Evil One." (Apparently Jack Daniels is not counted among the Evil One's tools.)
We can all be grateful that apparently no one was hurt by Rev. Salvatore Cordileone's reckless and immature behavior.
In other news of Christians who preach a better life than they practice, how about the story of Grant Storms, from the New York Daily News:
An anti-gay pastor in New Orleans was convicted of masturbating in a public park last year, telling authorities in his confession that the sex act was a "thrill" and a "fantasy."
Grant Storms, who gained notoriety by leading a raucous march against homosexuals during New Orleans' annual gay-oriented Southern Decadence festival, was found guilty of obscenity on Wednesday for the Feb. 25, 2011, incident.
Storms was busted in Lafreniere Park in suburban Metairie after a nanny spotted him behind the wheel of his parked van with his penis out and a hat partially covering his face.
Storms had made a name for himself protesting New Orleans' annual "Southern Decadence" gay Mardi Gras-like celebration, calling his mission
"anti-depravity."
