The Republican theme of the weekend is to ask if we are better off than we were four years ago. It set me to thinking...
4 years ago we were locked in a high interest mortgage on a house that was underwater. Thanks to President Obama's housing initiatives we were able to negotiate a short sale on the loan and walk out debt free and without a tax obligation -- and the house has a new family to love it.
4 years ago my employer was shaky and cutting staff -- I thought I would be next. But thanks to President Obama's support for alternate energy sources my company has found a new and profitable future and my job is secure.
4 years ago we had three kids out of college with no health insurance, one of them seriously ill. Thanks to the ACA we were able to cover them until they reached age 26 and my daughter got the treatment she needed. My sister, who was uninsurable in 2008 at any price (due to a prior condition) now has health coverage
4 years ago our retirement savings had tanked. Thanks to President Obama's economic policies our 401K is on its way back and now it looks like we might still be able to retire.
4 years ago we locked in and endless war on global terrorism. Thanks to President Obama Bin Laden is now dead and Al Queda has become ineffective as a terrorist force.
So is our family better off than we were 4 years ago? Damn straight we are -- thanks to this President and his courageous stand for the middle class... But there is still a lot more to do -- for the people who still are facing foreclosure, who are struggling to find work or who can't get the health care they need at a price they can afford. That's why President Obama and the Democratic Party need our support -- so four years from now we -- all of us -- can be better off than we are today.
