Stephanie Cutter: Mitt Romney and China
Today, Obama for America posted Stephanie Cutter's forceful, detailed rebuttal of the lies in the Romney campaign's ad attacking President Obama's record on manufacturing. As has been the pattern thus far, the Obama campaign is refusing to allow the lies and hypocrisy of the Romney/Ryan campaign to stand unchallenged:
Summary of Stephanie Cutter's 3-minute rebuttal: The Romney campaign said that it won't "be dictated by fact-checkers"—in other words, they won't be driven by facts. But whether the truth matters in this election isn't up to the Romney campaign, it's up to you.
Romney's new ad lies about President Obama's jobs record and doesn't reveal the facts behind the Romney-Ryan plan to ship 800,000 jobs overseas—including 73,000 to China.
The Romney ad also says the President hasn't challenged China over unfair trade policies—a statement Mitt Romney knows isn't true. Mitt Romney actually attacked the President for being too tough on China when they were flooding the market with tires. You can check that out on page 119 of Romney's own book, "No Apology."
And Romney isn't apologizing for the investments he still holds in China. Or the American jobs he outsourced to China as the president, CEO, chairman, and sole shareholder of Bain Capital.
President Obama has stood up for American workers, by filing trade cases against China at twice the rate of his predecessor. President Obama has fought for manufacturing jobs since day one, and now he's set a goal of 1 million new manufacturing jobs by the end of his second term.
That's the truth. No wonder the Romney campaign doesn't want to be guided by the facts.
The Question - Obama For America TV Ad
Released just this morning, Obama for America's TV ad "The Question" first provides a reality check for the "Are you better off?" question that the Romney campaign is still doggedly trying to push. The ad then pivots to what OFA characterizes as the "real question" - "Whose plan is better for you?" - as it contrasts President Obama's plans to ask millionaires to help Americans with Romney's plans to help multi-millionaires and bankers while raising taxes on the middle class. It concludes with both former President Clinton and President Obama emphasizing that Romney wants us to go back instead of forward:
President Obama: I'm Barack Obama, and I approve this message.
Narrator: He keeps saying it...
Romney: "This President cannot tell us that you're better off today than when he took office."
Narrator: Well, here's where we were in 2008:
Reporter: "Worst financial collapse since the great depression."
Reporter: "American workers were laid off in numbers not seen in over three decades."
Narrator: And here's where we are today: 30 months of private sector job growth, creating 4.6 million new jobs.
We're not there yet. But the real question is: Whose plan is better for you?
The President's plan asks millionaires to pay a little more, to help invest in a strong middle class, clean energy, and cut the deficit.
Mitt Romney's plan? A new two-hundred-fifty-thousand-dollar tax break for multi-millionaires. Roll back regulations on the banks that cratered the economy. And raise taxes on the middle class.
Bill Clinton: "They want to go back to the same old policies that got us in trouble in the first place."
President Obama: "We're not going back. We are moving forward."
Narrator: Forward.
The Obama campaign is running this ad in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Virginia. Early this morning,
