This is going to surprise the Romney camp, but there are folks out there dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, and who are failing to take personal responsibility - but who will be voting for Romney this fall.
They call themselves "farmers".
The USDA has a webpage which breaks down the tax-payer-funded subsidies they dish out by congressional district.
Of the top 25 recipient districts, 19 are solidly red - Cook Partisan Voting Index (PVI) of R+5 or higher plus a Republican incumbent. These 19 districts have taken in a combined $97.6 billion over the last 16 years (that is as far back as the database goes).
In many of these districts, if you divide the total amount of subsidy received over that period by the total number of voters in the 2010 election the result is simply staggering.
* NE-3 (Adrian Smith, R) = $52,934
* KS-1 (Tim Huelskamp, R) = $49,824
* TX-19 (Randy Nuegebaur, R) = $46,807
* IA-5 (Steve King, R) = $45,807
* ND-al (Rick Berg, R) = $42,406
That, folks, is what patronage looks like.
