Bucks debating in my backyard
The genre of the debate doesn't matter. Was it with your kindergarten teacher about why you should be exempt from napping? Was it with your dad about taking the car alone, or your mom about cleaning your room? Was it with a neighbor about politics or replacing a shared fence? Was it here at Daily Kos?

Mine was here, back in the day, say 2005. A very prominent and outspoken member of the community defended another Kossacks's use of the expression "off the reservation." To clarify, that's where the debate was, between these two users. One reasoning about how offensive the term was and the prominent user arguing about not buckling to censorship. The debate stalled with an impasse. Saddened by the whole exchange and after giving it a think I came back to the dead thread and replied to the prominent user with a calm plea briefly explaining that this expression hurts American Indians and feeds an on-going misunderstanding of the fact that we are still here. That the reservation was where we were incarcerated. I asked kindly to please not use that expression and bid them goodnight. I fully expected no reply. But I got one and they said they would make this one exception. The user was called on this later and as I followed their comments I was so pleased when they declared in another comment thread that they weren't going to use that expression any longer as an agreement with another member of this community. They did not say it was me.

So while it wasn't my fiery debate apparently my calm plea was persuasive.

What was your best debate success?

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
