The President of Planned Parenthood, Cecile Richards, knows exactly what Mitt Romney is up to.
The president of Planned Parenthood on Wednesday blasted Mitt Romney’s latest comment on abortion, saying he is “trying so hard to mislead people” about where he stands.
She called it “troubling” that Romney is “so willing to play politics” on women’s health issues.
“Women frankly just can‘t trust Mitt Romney and the American people can’t trust him to be honest and direct about where he stands,” Richards said.
Her remarks were made in response to Mitt Romney's most recent flip-flop-flipping on abortion. In an interview with an Iowa newspaper he claimed to be 'unfamiliar' with any legislation about abortion that would be in his agenda. Soon after that his campaign reassured conservatives he was still pro-life, contradicting their candidate.
Romney on Tuesday told the Des Moines Register that abortion legislation won’t be part of his agenda. Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards said the Republican presidential nominee has said repeatedly he would “be delighted” to sign a bill banning all abortions in the country, pledged to get rid of Planned Parenthood and blasted Roe v. Wade.
The Obama campaign has been quick to point out Romney's changing position, saying he wants to have it both ways - moderate and conservative. All at once. On a conference call with reporters Stephanie Cutter said the
following:
“We know that the real Mitt Romney will say anything to win,” Stephanie Cutter, deputy Obama campaign manager told reporters on a conference call Wednesday. “With just 27 days left before the election, he’s cynically and dishonestly hiding his real positions.”
Obviously the Romney strategy is to say one thing to moderates, while hoping conservatives don't notice the etch- a - sketch. And, it's one thing for the Obama campgaign to hit back, but the President of PP speaking out so forcefully against Romney should be devastating.
And it seems Gov. Rick Perry is jumping on board to not only help reassure conservatives but shed light on Romney's strategy of weasel words:
Texas Gov. Rick Perry isn’t worried about his former primary rival’s reluctance to push legislation restricting abortion rights, saying on Wednesday that he’s confident Mitt Romney will appoint “constitutionalists” to the Supreme Court.
“I think the Supreme Court is where that issue will be decided, from the standpoint of how America’s going — We’ll have a Supreme Court decision, and that’s where the focus will be,” Perry said on CBS’ “This Morning.” “He’s said very clearly that he’s going to put people who are constitutionalists on the Supreme Court.”
Oh I get it. He's not aware of any legislation per se. He'll just appoint Supreme Court justices who will take care of that for him. Sort of like Romney repeating he wouldn't reduce the 'share' of taxes paid by the 1%, while lowering them to historic lows.
