Teacher's Comments from Mrs. Caskey:
My Students: Do you remember the fascination of looking at a creature and saying "What is that" or "Why is the bug's top different from the bottom?" My children need to be encouraged to explore nature and discover the joy of the natural world around them. These resources will spark their interest.
My students are energetic children who come from several cultural bases. Many of these kindergrtners are from low-income or poverty households. They love to learn but do not have all the economic advantages. With their enthusiasm, nothing holds them back once their interest has been captured.
My Project: I am requesting 1 Insects specimen center, 1 life cycle photo book set, and 1 set of science specimens. The early learning specimens will let students observe and handle the starfish, leaf and insects, etc. They will be able to see the tops and bottoms. When paired with the books and learning center objects, they will begin to inquire and want to know more. This will lead to further inquiry. Many of these children do not play outside. Therefore creatures, no matter how small or harmless, are scary. These items will help them realize that their world is a wonderful place with intriguing creatures within it. These items will also lead to actual searching and observing of these items in their natural environment.
My school does not have the resources to purchase these items that will make a difference in developing future scientists. These resources will spark curiosity and lead to further inquiry by my kindergarten students.
