I had intended to go into work yesterday afternoon...but the subways were closing down at 7 PM and I wasn't sure I would be able to make it back. So I stayed home with my family, did some work from home, and pushed some efforts NYC folks could do while stuck at home waiting for Sandy. Now I got some push back from people who felt I shouldn't be pushing for NYC activism while faced with a hurricane, but I also noticed other NYC residents blogging about the phone banking they were doing at the exact same time and for the exact same reasons...because we had nothing else constructive to do while waiting for Sandy. And honestly I think some of us are now experiencing the hurricane and STILL have time to focus on the November election. So for NYC residents who are hanging out doing nothing because of the hurricane, take some time singing up to win in November.
Well today the hurricane is slowly, slowly making its way in. I am on the board of my building so I spent a lot of time sandbagging and otherwise preventing problems in my building. But the bottom line is we are waiting for the flood...and we know it.
So far no flood. A few branches have fallen in our yard. Two buildings down a whole mature tree blew down and blocked the road. Amazingly it seemed to fall right between two cars on both sides of the street, but it still closed off the street and brought both cops and fire department to our block.
But our building remains fine so far but with falling trees and flooding still something I need to help keep track of 24 hours.
As long as the power continues, I will update. But for now Park Slope Brooklyn has fallen trees and yet the main grocery stores and restaurants remain open and smiling.
So far Hurricane Sandy has not hit us hard...but the worst is yet to come according to predictions.
Will update as the trees fall and water rises.
