As part of our GOTV blogathon last week, we did research to create a template of resources for online phone banking for close races. A lot of phone banking is done at local offices, but many people live in a community where the candidate is GOP or the Democrat has winning margins. When multiplied nationwide, there might be a significant pool of volunteers available for phone banking if they can do online. So, we targeted campaigns that provided phone-banking opportunities for volunteers who did not live in the candidate's district or state.
Many of us are accustomed to the online phone banking provided by President Obama where it is just a click to obtaining the voter's name, phone number, and the script for the call. But, many campaigns don't offer this type of "traditional" online phone banking.
However, our research found that some campaigns are essentially creating "traditional online phone banking" by using alternative resources. These campaigns use a variety of alternative resources, including FB app, dedicated software that volunteers can logon to from inside/outside the district, and some will email PDFs of names and numbers to interested activists from all over the country. The contacts on our list below might provide a script, or you can use a script from some other online phone-banking site.
Many people are not aware of these alternative home phone-banking options that enable New Yorkers, for example, to do phone banking for close races in other states.
Not finding a resource online that listed both the traditional online phone banking and the phone banking with alternative resources, we created it ourselves.
JekyllnHyde created this beautiful template that provides the following phone banking resources that can be used by volunteers to phone bank from your home for close races in other states or districts:
1. President Obama and two Senate races (Elizabeth Warren and Tim Kaine) provide traditional online phone banking where the voters' list and script are published online.
2. A number of progressive groups organize phone banking online from your home for races nation wide: Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), Democracy for America (DFA), Workers' Voice and Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC).
3. A variety of alternative resources for House and Senate races. As you scroll down the list of candidates, you will see that contact information is provided so you can call or email to volunteer to phone bank from your home for these candidates.
These resources are making a difference. A staffer from Mark Takano's campaign told
peregrine kate how 9,000 calls were made for his campaign last weekend via the PCCC link!
Campaigns appreciate our project to compile this list of home phone banking opportunities. One staffer told peregrine kate that it is so great to hear from us, because sometimes he "feels like he's all alone out here." Knowing that other people around the country are paying attention gives the staff and candidate a huge boost.
Online/Remote/Virtual Phone Banking Links for Election 2012
Phone Banking Guidelines - Please read this.
Our list is targeted at available resources that allow, for example, Californians to phone bank for close races in Ohio, Florida, Virginia, and other battleground states even when online phone banking is not provided by the campaigns. The new tool is remote/virtual phone banking.
Many campaigns don't have online phone banking like you might have done in the past for the Obama-Biden Campaign, which is one click away to a script and list of voters. Please contact the following Democratic campaigns that use a variety of alternative resources including Facebook applications and dedicated software. Volunteers can log on from inside or outside the state or Congressional District. Some campaigns will email PDFs of names and numbers to interested political activists from all over the country. Read the directions carefully for each campaign.

So many people have thanked us for our GOTV blogathon last week.
We also wish to express our sincere appreciation to everyone in the community for your support and encouragement of our GOTV Blogathon.
Special, heartfelt appreciation and profound thanks to Meteor Blades, who made this blogathon possible in so many ways. Meteor Blades worked with me on so much of the prep work and administrative issues since last September despite his already busy schedule. He shies from being given credit, but it was not just his excellent advice, commentary, and thoughts. Blogathons take a lot of time and work that is squeezed in with real life and our work schedules. Meteor Blades was always available immediately when I contacted him by phone or email. This made it so much easier to proceed with the next steps that we did not have any delay in waiting for his advice.
Special thanks also to our team: Onomastic, JekyllnHyde, boatsie, peregrine kate, ShoshannaD, and rb137. This does not begin to thank each one for all they have done in this and past blogathons over the years, but I wanted to just say a few words because each team member has shown such dedication, passion and energy for projects that consume a lot of time.
Onomastic and I have partnered on this blogathon since September, doing the invitations and all the prep work involved, and now she is dealing with Sandy. JekyllnHyde is the master of our beautiful templates in this blogathon and many over the past years, as well as promoting in threads all week long. boatsie, even while still grieving for her beautiful dog, did amazing work with social media and twitter. peregrine kate and ShoshannaD contacted me during the blogathon to see if we needed assistance, and then devoted days of researching phone banking links both online and making the phone calls to campaigns. rb137 assisted in a myriad of ways, including sending email notices when diaries were posted despite her busy work schedule.
We could not have accomplished this blogathon without the invaluable assistance of elfling with technical and administrative issues that arose before and during the week of the blogathon. Some days of blogathon week were pretty intense with last minute requests for assistance from our guests.
We also want to thank community series that promoted our blogathon last week: Bill in Portland Maine with Cheers and Jeers, BeninSC and the Top Comments Team, JanF with J-Town, blue jersey mom and nomandates and the ONN Team, Oke for OND and Meteor Blades for Night Owls.
All of our guests were spread so thin with election work so we are especially delighted that they joined us: Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, Senator Sherrod Brown, SEIU President Mary Kay Henry, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Van Jones, Senator Al Franken, AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Arlene Holt Baker, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, SEIU International Secretary-Treasurer Eliseo Medina, Rep. Barbara Lee, Governor Jennifer Granholm, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Democratic Candidate Carol Shea-Porter, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Elizabeth Shuler, Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva, Democratic Candidate Tammy Duckworth, Democratic Candidate Jose Hernandez, and United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodríguez.
Our guests truly enjoyed participating in our blogathon. In fact, some will be participating more at Daily Kos in the future, some asked to be included in our future blogathons, and we also discussed upcoming projects.
Move it forward with phone banking!
