And, of course, win the Electoral College!
Let me explain, below the Orange Squiggle of doom...
First off, I think there's a pretty good chance this actually happens. With the hurricane damage possibly resulting in lower turnout in safe Obama states in the northeast and with rabid Red turnout in many of Mitt's safe states, this is a real possibility. So why do I hope it happens?
1.) There's a movement afoot whereby states would commit to spreading their electoral votes proportionately to the participants. California has signed on but only when enough states join to make it fair. This will mean we'll have a national vote and no more Gore "losing" Florida situations to deal with. 500 votes in Florida deciding something this important is just plain dumb. If Red states perceive they've been "robbed" in this election, they'll be more inclined to join the states who've already pledged and this could become a reality.
2.) It'll mean candidates need to run a national campaign. No more will we see hundreds of millions spent in Ohio and Florida while states with a 55% leaning one direction or the other get nothing. Now, I'm damn glad I live in Illinois and don't have to deal with the constant election ads on TV, don't get me wrong. But there's something to be said for helping the local economies of all of the states if the candidates have to work them all. And with Citizens United, that somewhat unlimited money the R's have will need to be spread over more locations. I'd hope this would dilute the influence they have by being able to slam just one or two places. Let's face it folks, Obama may be the last Presidential candidate we'll see for the D's in a long time with this sort of personal appeal. Being able to overcome this much advertising is an amazing feat. Either we need to overturn Citizen's United or we need to find other ways to make it less relevant.
3.) It'll hurt. It'll hurt real bad! For Republican voters, this'll leave them smarting for years to come. And I want them to feel what I felt in 2000. I hate these fuckers. I want Fox News personalities weeping! I want Hannity and Rush holding each other for comfort on Wednesday after the President wins!
