(freshrant.com) The title is not misspelled. It’s the name I propose for every GM and Chrysler vehicle made in this country since President Obama took office. Republican wordsmiths thought they could use Obama's name to discredit The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. I believe time will tell that attaching Obama's name to the healthcare bill as a negative will backfire. I suggest supporters reclaim Obama's name, this time to highlight the president's key role in saving the U.S. automobile industry.
Just as the president went against consensus to go in for the kill of Osama bin Laden, so did Obama ignore the full-throated chorus of dissenting Republican voices. Most notable among those discordant voices was that of Mitt Romney, who was ready to “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt” and dump the American automobile onto the trash heap of history.
More surprising to some would be the addition of Ford as an ObamaCar. Although the company took no government money, its survival was also threatened. The Ford Motor Company gave strong support for the government auto loans to GM and Chrysler as did foreign automobile companies with manufacturing plants in America. The entire automotive industry is dependent upon mutual supply chains that were also in threat of collapse when President Obama took office.
We are now enjoying a renaissance of exciting, high quality, highly competitive American vehicles built in this country despite Mitt Romney’s deceitful, fear-inducting ads claiming President Obama is somehow moving American Jeep production to China. Chrysler’s CEO and General Motors representatives have chimed in to make a rare intervention into politics to call out Romney for his lie.
As we make our next trip to the voting booth, those of us who care about our economy and the renewed greatness of American automotive ingenuity, should remember who came to the rescue to revive all those shiny new vehicles rolling off U.S. assembly lines. Three cheers for ObamaCar!
