There were some unusual things that happened with undervoting ballots today in the precinct where I served as a Dem election judge. Follow me below the great liberal orange cloud below.
I worked today as a Dem election judge in a polling place in a city that is primarily GOP voting town.
We had a 3 page ballot, with voting on both sides of the page, essentially a six sided ballot. Many people didn't bother to vote on issues and candidates. I don't know their political affiliation, as it should be.
We have a system of marking ballots with black ink, which are then scanned by the voter into an ES&S scanning machine.
When a voter didn't vote on every race, he/she is alerted to this fact as they scan their ballot, giving them the chance to accept their voting status as shown, or they can choose to have the ballot returned to them for corrective voting action.
On numerous occasions, voters told me, before scanning their ballot pages, that they hadn't voted in every race. When I told them the machine might reject their ballot and ask them if they wanted to accept it as is or recover the ballot page and correct their ballot (we had 3 pages, printed on both sides), most elected to accept the ballot as scanned w/ missing votes.
The odd thing I noticed was that, while many people told me they didn't vote in every choice, the machine still accepted their ballot w/o alerting them to missing choices.
This problem, in most cases was duly noted by me on the precinct "pink sheet" a paper record in the poll book where judges note problems, errors, etc. that occur during voting. I decided to make note of these occurrences because I thought it seemed odd.
I am not a lawyer, nor an ace on electronic ballot scanning for 3 page, 2 sided ballots that are not fully completed. I could be completely wrong in being concerned about ballots with missing votes being accpeted by ballot scanning & tabulating machines. But, I'm just putting it out there.
