:-c → :-/ → :-)

Republicans, relax.

Your country is still here, right where you left it last night when you went to bed. It will be here tomorrow, next year, and next election.

No one's gonna to throw you in some re-education camp. Unless you do something stupid with that Li'l Patriot™ in your holster.

No one's gonna take away your straightness or your guns, or force you to have abortions. Your opinions, rights and freedom are safe, for another four years, at least. I wish could be as confident saying the same, had your team won last Tuesday.

See, it's ok if worldviews are mandated on the rest of the country, as long as they're your worldviews. It's ok to ridicule people for wanting freedom to choose for themselves, as long as it's not what you would have chosen. And it's perfectly acceptable to gloat, as long as you win.

Now, you might be tempted to say that our side is doing the same when advocating for our beliefs. There's one key difference though, as I see it: you seek to restrict, we seek to choose. In your eyes choice is tyranny, and restriction is freedom. End of discussion. So freedom is relative, not absolute, because to you these don't count:

  • Freedom from worry that your guns will do something we'll all regret.
  • Freedom for women to do as they see fit with their personal property.
  • Freedom to love and marry whoever you want.
  • Freedom to live on a planet as it was first given to us, not as a wasteland.
  • Freedom to be citizens, and to have all the rights that come therewith, regardless of skin color.
  • Freedom from destitution because we happen to get sick, or simply grow old.

And that's just to name a few.

All is not lost for you though, a glimmer of hope remains: Just think of all the conspiracies you'll be able to concoct, not to mention all the shadows seeking to destroy "your" country that you'll get to defend against. Or all the fruitless impeachment proceedings you'll get to encourage. Bliss.

Because there's no better measure of patriotism than fighting against non-existent threats.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country has some progress to make.

Move, you're in the way.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

you seek to restrict, we seek to choose.
Rachel has a promo that lays out how the twin poles of fiscal conservatism and social conservatism that is finally (?) starting to pull the GOP apart.

In short, the two aren't necessarily antithetical, but (to paraphrase) the GOP uses "small government" and "JOBS!!" as a Trojan horse to slip anti-Gay, anti-abortion etc Movement conservatism into the mix.

Or as she puts it (citing great examples of what the Rethugs have "accomplished" in the last two years: "English as an official language, banning Sharia law"):

argue your case [GOP] but don't give me this 'small government' stuff'

They get no more time.  They revealed themselves in the last two years in the most ugly, misogynistic manner.

They have worn out their welcome.  It doesn't matter what & how their loss Tuesday night smarts.  Why should women, African Americans, children on Medicaid & Latinos give them more time?

They just had two years worth of legislative, governorship time.  As Governor Scott Walker took away bargaining rights.  As Governor, Rick Scott took away voting rights.  As Governor Bob O'Donnell introduced transvaginal probing.
As Governor Rick Perry took away access to breast exams & cervical cancer screening to over 40,000 women & girls.

      No.....more.....time!

  •  These nuts act like the apocalypse has arrived (3+ / 0-)

simply because a moderate democrat has been re-elected.  If you have the stomach for it, go to #tcot on Twitter and see what the emotionally-stunted loonies are posting.  You'll see racism in full display, scads of people cheering the juvenile business owners who are getting their revenge by firing workers, "Obama stole the election" conspiracy theories, baseless ramblings about Obama shredding the Constitution, lots of accusations of Obama not being a Christian, unstable gun talk, plenty of makers/takers/"free stuff" bs, and of course, Benghazi.

It's sad and scary watching this republican meltdown.  They are literally shitting themselves and screaming for their right-wing masters to do anything to screw over their fellow Americans in revenge....over nothing.  If these people shut off the AM radio and Fox News and just went about their lives, they'd probably never even know that Obama was president.    Why?  Because all of the crazy shit they think he's going to do.....he isn't.

I've tried gently challenging some of these people--I'm not sure if that's the right approach.  Someone screamed about crushing taxes...I bet him that his federal income taxes actually decreased during Obama's first term.  I remind them that REPUBLICANS ran the elections in the swing states they claim were stolen and that Obama always led in the polls.  I note that if asshole business owners lay off employees and shut down production, the larger economy is recovering and those employees and that demand will happily be absorbed by sane business owners.

Will they be capable of adjusting to reality?  I suspect most of them will not.  And it's not funny, because there's a good chance a few of these people will attempt to act on their violent statements.  I saw someone on a forum recently seeming to support the people in red states he claimed were stockpiling weapons to take action.

I like your diary because reassuring these people who have been unbelievably manipulated by right-wing media that this election is not the beginning of the apocalypse is a lot more helpful than gloating at them and feeding into their post-election hatred.

(Note:  I'm not suggesting we don't strongly and derisively knock down their ideology, just that the "We Won and You'll Never Win Again!  HA HA!" stuff isn't helping in the long run.)

I can't help but wonder just how much skin color is contributing to this apocalyptic lunacy.

Granted, some would exist no matter what, simply because the president is a Democrat, but there's no doubt in my mind that there's more to it than that.

Keep in mind, when you undertake the noble task of reassurance, three words I mentioned in the diary...

      End of discussion.
They probably won't listen. But individual cases may prove receptive. How to pick those those out efficiently is a question I have yet to find the answer to.

Thanks for reading, and good luck.
