With all the vitroil directed by the GOP at us and President Obama, how do we bridge to gap?

I keep wondering why many of my GOP friends and co-workers are looking at me so funny after President Obama won last Tuesday. Some GOP friends just stare at me without speaking to me. We used to laugh together and joke together about things going on in our lives and families but since the election, cold hard silence and frowns.

I couldn't quite figure it out until I listened to some excerpts of Rush Limbaugh's show on MSNBC after the election and read some of the below horrific tweets on Twitter.

An example below of "Twitter hate" with the worst and most racist of the Tweets deleted:

not my president. Obama is the worst of mankind.

very clear that the Obamas do not care that we exist not gay not pro abortion not black illegals not ignorant like you!

I saw that coming Obama is corrupt beyond measure

Most of it coming from eyewitness accounts and reports of over 100% turnout for dozens of countiews in swing states.

Let the economy collapse! This may be the best thing that could happen to this Obama government. Do not give the dictator Obama an inch!

why can't the ppl of America see this. Dems see free crap without weighing the cost. The cost of freedom and even their lives.

There are no secrets in Washington except for the dictator Obama's

Our country has been compromised by the Muslim Brotherhood via a "hand up by their dear leader Barack Obama." enjoy sharia law liberals

THE HARD TRUTH IS* THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ELECTED A CROOK, THEY DIDN'T KNOW A DAMN THING ABOUT, & TO CLEAN UP THE MESS WE MUST IMPEACH HIM **

More thoughts on the gap between Red and Blue below the squiggle:

More Twitter hate directed at us and President Obama:

Benghazi Obama ordered. STAND DOWN He killed our own!

Well if YOU never believed in voter fraud just review the Cuyahoga County, Ohio election results yourself

Why do I know more about Gen Petraeus' personal life in 1 report than I do over the murder of four Americans in benghazi two months ago?

They locked my account for the last 24 hours for saying too much. The truth is dangerous.

We were scammed by the Obama regime. We need to demand restructuring of voting process. DEMAND PHOTO ID OR NO VOTE. One person, one vote!!!

Petraus scandal is the tip of the iceberg. Amount of crap that was pushed past election is going to blow your mind!

Florida Secretary of State contact information. FL residents please innundate Tues & urge him to initiate RECOUNTNOW

Florida.: 53K dead people on voter rolls

We are no longer a Democracy Obama is a dictator!

Probably my best take away from all the hate that has come out of the GOP supporters after the election is that if they keep generating this kind of hate, it will be very hard for them to attract any new voters to their party for many years to come.

The GOP has lost the popular vote in the Presidential elections every time (Except in 2004 with GW Bush) since 1988. That's a long time to be on the losing end. And they may well stay there until they learn to reach out instead of hate.

I have this to say to the GOP: Dear GOP: You can blame hurricanes & make other excuses but you only lost because of one word: * HATE * while Democrats teach respect & dignity.

What will it take for the Romney voters to come around so we can govern this country together. Or is the bridge too far apart after all the HATE toward us Democrats and President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama and VP Joe Biden?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

with whom we can never bridge the gap.  These people have drank the Fox Koolaid and are probably permanently gone, never to accept reality again.  Hopefully there is enough of a stigma forming around Fox that they are recruiting fewer victims.  We need to encourage and reinforce that stigma.

For the minority of republicans who are reachable and might be converted, we need to be calm and reassure them that the apocalypse fantasies coming from the right wing media will not come to pass and just be factual with them when we debunk the myths.  Just like with a hysterical child, you tell the child that everything will be alright--basically the opposite of what Fox, Rush, Hannity, et al are doing right now.

    And the gloating won't help.

    •  The gloating is quite the opposite ... (0+ / 0-)

of demonstrating "respect and dignity".  People will remember it for a long time to come and not only be put off, but use it as a reason to not compromise on anything.  It's embarrassing.

  •  THESE GUYS (12+ / 0-)

are bullies. Have you noticd that the only time time they are happy is when they are in power. The worst thing we can do is to be afraid of these people. AT this time all they got is hate, maybe they are forgeting something the worst terrorist attack on the country happened while they they were in power, Iraq and the collapse of the economy all happened while they were in charge. My advice is we fight back not try to pacify these haters it will never be enough all they want is power back then there will be peace. For me that is a deal not worth making. They lost fair and square if they believe the election was stolen from them let them prove it. I will be darmed if I am going to let them rob me of the joy of this victory sorry. They are angry they did not get their "country back" from who do they want it back from their fellow citizens. They will like to make the rest of us outsiders and I am not going to let  them God forbid.

  •  Lost my sister this election... (18+ / 0-)

...and may never have a relationship with her again.  I always knew she was a Republican and a Romney supporter, but something broke in her after the election.  She posted a disjointed, angry screed on my FB page; my response was not a point-by-point rebuttal but an explanation of where my liberalism came from.  I haven't heard from her since and am not sure I ever will.

I'm willing to give my sister and others who voted for Romney time to work through their grief.  But I won't sit by silently and take the brunt of the hatefulness.  I have always been a conciliator by nature, but that doesn't mean I'm going to be a rug to walk over.  I recognize the fear, but when that translates to expressions of hatred, I will stand up and denounce that.  As I told my sister, "If you want to have a conversation, we'll have a conversation.  But if 'conversation' to you means a recitation of talking points without showing me who you are, then the conversation will be necessarily short."

There's a reason that the Obama campaign always emphasized "tell your story."  If one is speaking in personal terms, the power of talking points is diminished.  And that's one lesson I'm going to take with me in the battles ahead.

some of my in-laws for the first time in 10 years.

They found out after insulting us, making hurtful decisions and shunning us, that we would not put up with it.

In a 3 hour meeting, we spoke of some family events which had happened, and little else.  Things will never be the same as they were from the mid-60's to late '90s.  They are in a geographic (Appalachia) and news bubble which is ruled by rigid authoritarians (politically and with religion) and FAUX.  They are receptive to being exploited for all their fears.

Don't be a rug!  They will probably never respond to reason or just knowing you have a different POV, because the hate has been programmed into them.  At one point 9 yrs ago, Mr Pinhole said, "I've lost my whole family!"  I reminded him that they had lost him and driven him & us away.

Carry on, it's a tough road.  Avoid the battles by avoiding a battle - And don't loose your self-respect! You don't have to rise to the bait, but yet can be firm in your principles.  Best wishes and hugs!

Some, like my niece, I can put up with. (See comment below.) She's down on Obama even tho she's on food stamps & getting medical assistance. go figure. But at least she will be respectful to me.

Other family members are a different story. And one thing I will not put up with is racism. If they insist on that kind of talk then they are not welcome in my home and I will not set foot in their home. Figure it was their choice. They could have stopped with their racism when I asked them to instead of doubling down on it.

They drove me away and that was their choice. But what a relief not to be around all that anger and hatred anymore.

hate sells, but it doesn't win elections.

At least not yet. It did in 2010, but that could have been a one-off. Maybe the public saw hate and delusion win an election in 2010 and decided not to let that happen again. Time will tell.

Not too much they can say to that.

Our Teabagger neighbors across the street are pathologically hateful.  Despite their money, they are greedy, crass, and generally antisocial.  When we see them we don't acknowledge their existence.  However, the day after the election, as we were walking the dog and they drove by, I smiled really big gestured a huge exaggerated wave.  Schadenfreude is sweet.

& a superior candidate.  If they were smart, they would never sneer or mock community organizing again.  It kicked their butts.....twice.  Not exactly gloating.....just stating the fact.

Have to say my tea bagger sister has been extremely cool about the election.   She even told me she had a dream the next morning that our deceased mother called her to check on her only conservative child.

I consider this progress.  She loves my kids immensely one of whom is gay.  It's not worth it to pick a fight over President Obama.....she knows I'm a mad fierce defender of my President.  We don't go there anymore.

Some of my husband's college buddies and their friends are over the edge.  One has two houses on a lake, one he inherited from his father.  He's the loudest complainer about those moochers 10 miles away in the city who have 25% unemployment, and need food stamps to eat.

I quit the card group, told my husband he could go without me.  He didn't.  If I see them at a social event and they start in on their FOX nonsense, I intend to say the following words:

"Do you know how ridiculous you sound?"  And then I will walk away.  I will not waste another moment on these hateful and selfish people.

Karl Rove showed that on national television.  Those claiming that the election was stolen are doing the same.

The second stage is anger.  Their anger is front and center, e.g., in the tweets that you have republished.

The questions of the moment are...

will there be a third stage?  If so, will it be bargaining, or something else?  And will there be any stages after that?  If so, what will they be?  Depression, and then finally acceptance?
