More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

I could think of something to say but I feel pretty hollow. My little town got it's own small version of this kind of horrendous violence two weeks ago today and the college is still shrouded in gloom. It wasn't a mass shooting but it was perpetrated by a Connecticutt Aspberger's sufferer on a relative--his father and the father's girlfriend. Little by little the US is becoming a war zone. Social and cultural pressures cause the weakest to crumble first--the ones who for whatever reason have not accessed help. The resulting suicides are bad enough, but these most mentally ill of our fellows are choosing to take others with them on the last journey. I am stunned to unaccustomed silence.

I am not sure how to deal with the demons that come with any reflections of what has happened today.
I have no remedies for myself nor any wisdom for others trying to cope.

I long to alleviate this evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

that the only way I can make a difference is to be counted when and if any kind of discussion moves into the public arena. Sometimes I wonder if armageddon can come soon enough.

was to be there for others when I was needed.
Lately I feel about as necessary as a piece of driftwood.
I always hated dumbass questions like, "If you were a tree what kind of tree would you be?"
There was a time I thought of myself as a big strong tree. I held the ropes of swings for children or provided shade for the weary or food for the wild things around me. But now, I have been pushed over and uprooted by great storms. My branches that lay in the river are being broken off and are floating away.

is very difficult to repurpose ourselves, much harder for people like you who had a purpose to begin with and now find themselves in a different place.

I have been purposeless since my parents died. I was trained for nothing else but to be happy for them. Now I have no one to be happy for but myself. I have a picture of me as a two year-old in a playchair. I am just sitting there looking around. I was put there and I didn't ever make any attempt to do anything but be there. I have rarely ventured out into the world, preferring instead to stay where I was put. So I still sit, looking around, without purpose.

Thankfully, we have dogs. They have a purpose for us, even when no one else does.

              Cold, heavy, steady.
Tomorrow will be warmer with some sunshine in the afternoon.
I bought a 7 pound pork arm roast a couple of days ago. I want to smoke it a bit out in the grill with maple branches I've collected from the yard and finish it off in the oven with apples and onions and pecans.
Mashed potatos and pickled beets and cornbread.
              Orange spice tea.
Da hound will get the bones.

matter as much. I'd want someone who has the qualities I appreciate now - like space when I need it, companionship when I want it, do his thing and let me do mine. You've got a lot - brains, independent, humor, and you love your dogs, among other qualities.

but first I went to his Kindergarten teacher, a wonderful super bright (Stanford BA and MA) bear of a guy, who loves his job. I had to give him a hug, and let him know I was thinking of him. As a Elementary Special Ed teacher for 28 years, hell, as a human being, this was the worst. I was sickened as the news came out that he'd purposefully gone to his mothers kindergarten classroom and killed her, then most of her students. Innocents, such a special age, full of awe and wonder, excited about Christmas holidays. Yesterday I wrote about our local tragedy, now I'm sad to be grateful it wasn't on the scale of Conn.
Here's a good take from my Rep. Earl Blumenauer

I am overcome with sorrow. This has been a tragic week. First, the shootings at Clackamas Town Center and now, Connecticut. As we hold the victims in our hearts, it is a time to grieve and cherish our families. But we must also not let this time of mourning be an excuse to be bullied into accepting the status quo. The tragedy of today must not obstruct the vision for a better, safer tomorrow. We pray and we look to the hard work ahead.

I can not control myself around homemade Chex Mix. I made a batch and ate damn near the whole batch, now I'm paying the price. It tears me up, and I know it. I was at the store and saw the chex boxes and told myself "DON'T DO IT!" Every item I picked up, fritos, bugles, picnic potato sticks, I repeated it "DON'T DO IT!" I even bought cute seasonal bags to divvy it up in, telling myself I'd give most of it away. I did manage to give away two small bags, but ate the rest. The cramping grumbling gut ache hit me as I was preparing and baking a second batch. Good thing you bake for 15 min, then stir it up and repeat. I'm well aware that this is TMI, but, hey we can speak frankly, right. I feel better getting that off my chest...and out of my system. Thanks.
