If your god kills little children because of a lack of prayer in schools then keep that little, worthless egocentric deity away from me. Any person who feels an iota of spirituality  would not use the school tragedy in Connecticut to push a religious viewpoint. At every tragedy it seems like some religious huckster has to proclaim that this is somehow justified by insufficient piety on the part of people. To hell with that and to hell with Mike Huckabee and Bryan Fischer and all the fundamentalists who pimp their beliefs on the back of human suffering. They do not portray the Jesus I learned about in Sunday school. No wonder people are turning their backs on religion.

Ditto to the NRA as well. Arming teachers is not the answer!

My sincere condolences to all those who are grieving. May it never happen again.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Huckabee news clip at HuffPo: My words:

“Mike's god, along with the god of too too many authoritarian hateful righties is a petty, selfish god (projection is so obvious with these evangelicals) god willing to let innocents be killed just to show them his anger at their "neglect" of worship. I remember reading "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" for American Lit in college. It was written by Jonathan Edwards back in the 1600s. It scared me and that says something since I had graduated from a catholic hs where "fear of God" was promoted through fear of sex, fear of eating meat in Fridays, fear of missing church, and fear of your parents going to hell forever because they did servile work on Sundays was the norm. Reading it also awakened me. Why would I want to spend eternity with such a petty, hateful deity. Huckabee's god is a hate filled god who punishes "lack of daily worship" with the deaths of babies. No thanks.”
I have long since let go of "religion" and keep my spirituality personal and private.  As a kid, I wanted to understand it all.   I read, and as a young adult I read more and more. The "god" of fear and hate is the one being pushed on so many by so many of the so called "great" religions.  What is so great about telling people to fear, to punish, to hide their bodies, their sexuality?  What is so great about teaching to supposedly "do good" only because there is a reward if you do so, and hell if you do not?   What is so great about teaching that unless others believe as you do, they will burn in the fires of eternal damnation??

When Huckabee said his stupid words, I just shook my head.  Then I saw a few FB acquaintances posting the same thing.  These are people who attend these evangelical churches, who insist there is a war on Christmas and believe that followers of their beliefs are "victims" of the rest of us for not doing as they say.  They will use this to get more and more "not very bright" people to believe if we ONLY let their God in the schools, in the public square, all guns and the violence they impose will be turned into weapons of love.  Some really believe this cr*p and refuse to acknowledge how pathetic they sound.

Huckabee and his ilk are hate mongers, control freaks and unreasonable different than the extremists of any sect.sad but true.

“Fear of serious injury cannot alone justify suppression of free speech and assembly. Men feared witches and burned women. It is the function of speech to free men from the bondage of irrational fears.”–Louis Dembitz Brandeis

If your Christian GOD allows this kind of thing to happen because he is feeling ignored then he is evil and not worthy of respect, let alone worship.

It's all God's plan, but God has been around a long time. He didn't plan for this mass shooting. He planned the Second Amendment, and he planned the NRA to defend the Second Amendment so that everyone could have plenty of guns to defend themselves from the evil in America.

God just forgot that he planned to have sociopaths and psychopaths running around. God is not evil. He's old and he just can't remember shit.

Idiots like Huckabee are a huge part of the reason why I'm so anti-religion.

The idea that any God would allow 20 children to be killed because we're not collectively kissing His arse enough to please him means that He isn't a God worth praying to in my book.

Any religion where "worship me or else!" is its most basic tenet is a bullshit religion for charlatans and rubes - and that goes for Christianity, Islam, Mormonism, Judaism - whatever.

It's not enough that we have churches on every corner, "In God We Trust" on our currency, and must pay homage to God while pledging allegience to our flag?   We have to bow down before Him in school now, too?

That is the fundamental ultimate of the concept of divine omnipotence.
Death is as much a part of being as life.
Deserving or innocence has absolutely nothing  to do with reaper.
When it is time, it is time regardless of age or circumstance.
That the young die is inherent in tragedy.

...I skip right past all of the "is he a hateful god", "is he an ineffective god" etc. arguments and get right to the heart of it -- too many guns in this country and an insufficient social safety net (including mental health funding). As happens with every one of these tragedies, the discussion immediately shifts to aspects of the problem itself.

I posted elsewhere here that I am receiving FB posts proclaiming the killing spree occurred because God is not allowed in the schools.  You've said it so well.
