I went to Church tonight and the question was asked, "Where was God?" on Dec. 14 in Sandy Hook elementary school. I'm sure the question was most likely asked in 1000s of churches this evening. And I'm sure that lots of people, including myself, wanted to call out, "Yeah, where was God?" but out of respect for decorum, allowed the priest or minister to be the sole person asking and addressing the question. And at this particular service the sermon was naturally about Jesus' birth. The priest spoke about John's prophecies (or visions) of the coming Messiah. Plus, a few miracles or signs that came before and after. And he also mentioned how God appeared to Joseph in a dream and explained to him the circumstances surrounding Mary's pregnancy and all. So, Joseph, who was having a difficult time coming to terms with it, finally understood, and he went on to do what was right and what God asked him to do. Hearing this story got me to thinking. (I'm no expert on religion, so I always have lots of questions.) It seems that people have a lot of trust in dreams and prophesies. Both have led the narrative and connected significant points in the stories of religion. But what if Joseph ignored his dream? What if others hearing it retold afterwards were to question the overall story, "The basis of this was a dream?"
So, I wondered, what if God appeared to the NRA in a dream and said, "No more guns. Unless you feel seriously threatened (and it's provable)- no more guns." And the dream can't be disputed, because the entire NRA had the same dream. Would gun owners give up their guns? Or, I was wondering, can the people in this congregation only accept dreams that happened over 2000 years ago and they are incapable of accepting everyone having the same nightmare today? Because we all saw the same nightmare come true. And yet, millions don't want any changes.
I'm hoping that people download "Is America Stupid?" and read the Guns chapter. Just this chapter. I lowered it to $.99 because I think that's as low as the price can go. It's not that I asked how long before the next incident, everyone always wonders that, but there is some background on why everyone wonders that.
