Saturday!

Itzl AlertingAs you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here.  We care!

If you'd like to be part of the Itzl Alert Network, please leave a comment asking to join, or send us a message asking to join. We'd love to have you. The bigger our network, the less likely someone will be stranded all alone.

Xoco has been going to work with us all week because it's been too cold for her to stay at home, and she's not happy about it.  The only saving grace is that Itzl is there for her to cuddle with, and he keeps watch.

Itzl, Xoco

But today's not a work day, it's a waffle day:

Rose Waffles

And a clean up the storage shed/garden shed day.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Going out later today for a bit, need to pick up Dad's birthday present now that the child support is here and do some other little shopping. Also need to go talk to the parent of a boy who lives nearby. 13 year old boy we've had problems with before, was caught last night trying to peek in my daughter's bedroom window. She's only 9.
My neighbor talked me out of walking over there in the rain last night to deal with it... in my pj's. My other neighbor across the street has his older sons keeping an eye on our house when they're hanging out in front of the house. If the kid is caught at it again he's liable to be a very sorry boy.
I'm hesitant to just call the police on him, because the police tend to over react, and what is likely just a stupid teenager doing something stupid could turn into something that will follow him forever. So if it can be handled locally without getting the police involved all the better. It really depends on how his parents respond and what happens, and if it becomes a recurring thing.

said that if you had a kid of 13 or 14 messing with a kid 10 or younger, you had, I quote, a "Pervert" on your hands and needed to get parents involved, if not law enforcement, pronto.

That was back before the RWNJ Christyunist homophobes took over the BSA, and before manuals included non-insulting language (slower boys were referred to as retarded, forex, and there were arguments against including boys with physical or mental handicaps in the troop activities "because it'll hold the normal boys back".) It's one of the few things worth heeding from that bassackwards-era manual, IMO, though:

the kid peeping in the window needs bringing up short NOW.

My daughter and her friend were just in there playing so there was nothing for him to see, but it still had me livid last night, so probably best I waited until today to deal with it.

I'll be getting a nice federal refund.  I'll have to give more money to the state.  However, I am in the fortunate position of - by the time I actually HAVE to send the check, I will have the money in hand.

Not the first time this has happened, but I liked it better when I got to get a few bucks back from the state, too.

cat litter, and dog food, and possibly cat grass today. And, there was a shelter there with cats and dogs... and we came home with a chihuahua mix 4 month old little girl. She's black and white, with black spots in the white, almost identical to our Catahoula actually. I think she's probably mixed with terrier of some sort. Caedy has pics but her phone died, they'll be up in a bit.

My daughter was with us, and she approached the crate, and it was love at first sniff between them. And she spent a lot of time in my lap with me sitting in my walker. I'm hoping she can do asthma and seizure alert for me, I think Freya will teach her.

Dori the pootie took to her fine. The puppy (who came with the name Sophie and we decided to keep it) is a little afraid of the cat, but the cat didn't even puff up. She just wants to play. I'm sure Sophie will warm up to her once she's settled, right now she just wants a lap.

We told Dad it was all Noddy and Itzl's fault LOL. He's the hold out, but he'll come around too.

that's a possibility too yes, but we'll never know because she was a drop off at the shelter's vet according to the paperwork. Right now she's up on my bed with the kids, we're all watching STNG. She was up on my shoulder earlier, sitting like our cat does LOL. She has had no trouble getting up on the furniture, I thought we'd be lifting her for a bit.

          •  Well, if Sophie (2+ / 0-)

has rat terrier in her, she could grow as large as 15 pounds. Rat terriers are between 6 and 25 pounds (the Type A, anyway, which is long legged and what people think of when they think "mutt", the TYpe B rat terrier looks like it has dachshund in it - short legged and long backed).

Jack Russells get to be between 10 and 20 pounds, so she'd be a bit smaller than with rat terrier in her.

Terriers are highly active dogs, requiring a lot of directed tasks and jobs. Without "work", they can get "small dog syndrome" and become aggressive, barking a lot, and destructive of property, chewing and digging.

Terriers are digging dogs.  Chihuahuas aren't, so Sophie could go either way.

If she demonstrates a desire to dig, redirect that to running through tunnels, because terriers love tunnels as much as digging - or more.  They were ratters, which meant they were bred to run through tunnels to flush the rats and rabbits and other small tunneling animals out.

You can get large dryer vent hoses, and some places make cat tunnels, and there are tunnels available for agility training of dogs, and sometimes, kid play tunnels (the ones made of fabric, will work, too. You can make tunnels from metal hoops and tubes of fabric.  Start out with short tunnels and when she goes through them, praise her, then encourage her to go through longer tunnels (make them and they'll be easier to lengthen by adding new sections).

In fact, I highly recommend agility training for dogs with terrier in them - it teaches them safe ways to play without getting into trouble. Other sites to check:  Build your own agility course, toys in agility, and this video of small dog agility.

Scent training is also a good choice for both Chihuahua and terrier - and if you want to use Sophie as a medic dog, scent training will do wonders for that. Check this site and watch this video to get started.

I have those book marked to read in more detail in the morning. We are hoping she'll be a working dog in the first place, and if not, Bit is definitely interested in agility.

Right now she's sleeping the sleep of the exhausted puppy who's had a BIG DAY, in Bit's bed, with the Itzl sock puppy and the Bit. But in case she has a rough first night, Draco is usually up until about 4am and is going to be keeping an ear out. And then there's Freya who wants to run and check on every puppy in the neighborhood that makes an unhappy sound. Now she can take care of Sophie and be happy. She greeted Sophie with a wagging tail and curious sniff.. and they've already been playing outside now that Sophie is more comfortable. Dori sniffed her and then went up to eat, but no hissing or bottle tail or anything. Sophie isn't sure of Dori yet, maybe she's been bopped by a cat in the past.

benefits, including for service dogs - it helps build trust and confidence in the dog, provides controlled exercise for the dog (especially important if the handler isn't strong enough to provide the exercise a service dog needs), and it helps keep the dog healthy longer by exercising all the muscles, not just the ones used for assistance.

I recommend agility (not competition agility, just the agility exercises) to everyone for whom I've trained a service or PTSD dog.
