Treadwell Enterprises owns more than 100 fast food franchises: Taco Bells, KFCs, HuHot Mongolian Grills, and Ruby Tuesday in 11 states.
One franchise, a Taco Bell in Guthrie, OK, was all over the news tonight because they have cut employee hours from full time to part time, with no one outside of management getting more than 28 hours of work a week - because of the Affordable Health Care Act.
I don't know anyone living in Guthrie, but it's a 30 minute drive from my house. I do know that many of the employees there are single mothers who need full time work to support their families. They were told they would be able to continue to work full time until just before December 25th, when they were then told they would all be going part time, effective January 1st.
I don't know if any other franchises owned by Treadwell Enterprises are doing this.
It makes me sad that there's at least one other fast food franchise that is choosing to punish their employees out of selfish greed rather than working to find a viable solution.
I can give them a dozen decent solutions, but I'll start with this one:
As a large company owning many fast food franchises, Treadwell Enterprises probably has enough employees throughout those 11 states to bargain with and receive really good insurance rates. They'll probably have the employee pick up the bulk of the cost anyway so getting a good rate would be helpful for them. Then, they could give the employees paid sick leave because who wants to eat food prepared or touched by someone who has been sick.
It would be a win-win situation.
No one would boycott them for being inhumane - so more business.
More business means more money to pay for things like employee insurance and sick leave, which in turn will mean more business because people will like knowing there won't be sick people handling their food.
Win again!
Why don't businesses like winning?
