On several occasions, I've brought you the rantings of Kevin Swanson, host of one of the more popular fundie-oriented web radio broadcasts, Generations Radio.  Well, he went way off the deep end on Monday's show.  He told his buddy, Dave Buehner--the same guy who claimed a few weeks ago that gays should get the same treatment as murderers, rapists and child molesters--that if Colorado legalizes civil unions, it could be the start of a slippery slope that could lead to homeschooled kids being taken from their homes and given to members of NAMBLA.  People for the American Way got a clip.

Swanson: You need to understand the agenda here. What’s happening is they want homosexuals to be able to be involved in adoption and foster care as much anybody else. So picture a nice little homeschool family, just trying to do the right thing. An anonymous tip comes in, social services swoops in, they grab the kids in the year 2022 and the kids get remanded into a home with homosexuals and these particular homosexuals happen to be tied into NAMBLA and other things. You know what’s going to happen. There will be proper indoctrination into a certain kind of worldview, shall we say.

Buehner: One that the Bible calls for capital punishment. That kind of worldview. It’ll be a tragedy in that house.

Swanson: Yeah. It’s a tragedy. It’s a tragedy. And I think there are a lot of concerned parents. There are concerned Catholic parents. There are concerned homeschool parents. And especially when you get a Regnerus study that comes out and says they’re ten times more likely to be touched sexually by a parent in a homosexual home than, you know, the normal American secular home. Wow. That’s frightening.

Tells you something about how far Swanson is grabbing for straws--the Regnerus study was so badly flawed that an audit conducted for the journal that ran it concluded it should have never been published.

Listen to the whole thing here (warning, self-downloading file).  It turns out Swanson isn't that concerned with such minor details as the validity of studies because, as he puts it, "we're not going to debate God's word."  He and Buehner also blamed our education system for the increasing acceptance of homosexuality in our society--the more educated you are, the more likely you are to support gay rights.  Hmmm, ya think?  Sounds like this guy is a younger version of Fred Phelps.

This is pretty serious business.  By Swanson's count, over a million people listen to him.  And a good number of them live in the bubble of filtered Internet service, private school/Christian school/fundie-oriented homeschooling for their kids, and listening to only Christian radio.  In other words--this claptrap is getting a lot of ears.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Oh wait, there's three extra letters in that, and that B isn't the R I thought it was...

    /snark

Seriously though, I would have happily had my kids go to a home with two lovely parents in it when they were in foster care...

Instead I got a couple that regularly strapped my son into a carseat for hours at a time and tormented my daughter.

    ...sigh...

I don't blame Christians. I blame Stupid. Which sadly is a much more popular religion these days.

tight for many of the religious grifters as followers notice that prosperity theology means prosperity for their ministers and theology for them.  I noticed one well known minister who is now shilling a complete library of his sermons for $50 where a few years ago, he wanted $1000 for the library.  He will also throw in a towel which he has prayed over which can be placed over an afflicted area for immediate healing.

As these guys are finding the fountains of cash drying up, they are radicalizing their message.  Muslim hatred was a literal gift from Heaven for them as it staved off financial retribution for a while but paranoia is exhausting.  We are a decade removed from 9/11 and the promised jihad has not arrived.

So they return to old themes such as LGBT issues as sure money makers.  The problem is that their demographic is literally dying off and the newer generations are hipper and more secular.  The faithful these days don't have the cash they once did and those that do are keeping it in the sock or under the mattress.  As events transpire, I predict Westboro Baptist will increasingly be seen as part of the mainstream (which is dismaying)

could think up stuff this weird. Therefore, Mr. Swanson must be mentally ill and not qualified to own a gun....

Being "pro-life" means believing that every child born has a right to food, education, and access to health care.

For those who are not familiar with Kevin Swanson here is some of his very best (10:20-11:51 minute mark):

...the prosecution of homosexuality, as a general crime, began in the 200s, in the Christian era, when male prostitution was banned by Phillip the Arab. So there was the first, very, very first, Christian law that came into play about 200 years after Christ. So finally start to get some Christian law in place that reigned in this horrible, egregious activity....

By the end of the 4th century, which is about the 380s, passive homosexuality under the Christian empire was punishable by burning and death by sword was the punishment for a man coupling like a woman under the Theodosian code.

Under Justinian all same sex acts passive or active no matter who the partners were declared contrary to nature and punishable by death. Homosexual behavior was pointed to as causes for God’s wrath following a series of disasters around 542 and 559.

Well that was the end of it for about a thousand years or 1200 years. So we had about 1200 year break where societies were able to build up and that’s how you get a reasonably decent Christian society...

The era – 1200 years of ‘Civilization’ - that Swanson declared to be “a reasonably decent Christian society” was actually the beginning and duration of the Dark Ages. It took place during the reign of the Catholic Church which, ironically, people of Swanson's religious beliefs declare to be a heretical, idolatrous and pagan church – a false Christian religion in the eyes of his fellow Evangelicals.

Of further irony is the fact that the Catholic Church had a subculture of pedophilia within the ranks of its clergy. The homosexuality and other sexual practices of Priests was so rampant and well known that it was the subject of ridicule, so much so that in the 14th century, a writer by the name of Giovanni Boccaccio wrote a book lampooning the sexual corruption of the Catholic clergy. Swanson should wonder how many Catholic priests were burned or put to the sword for their sexual practices.

Swanson’s irony continues. The disaster of 542 AD that he says homosexuals were blamed for, by provoking God’s wrath, was a Bubonic Plague Pandemic (The Plague of Justinian). This event brings forth an historical comparison. In the 14th century, 800 years later, another series of Bubonic plague epidemics hit Eurasia. Jews were blamed for spreading that disease and tens of thousands of them were killed by mobs. It is a common occurrence to blame undesirable people for causing major disasters whether they be natural or social.
