As the President travels the countryside calling the nation's attention to gun violence and the need to legislate now is laudable and even noble, without understanding the fundamental sickness that fuels America's lust for weapons, the country will never allow itself to be disarmed. However, since President Obama insist upon driving the distractive narrative that America must do something, anything, even the very least of things to curtail gun violence in the United States, we have no choice but to repeat ourselves as well.
Wayne LaPierre is correct, guns don't kill people, people kill people, and sick people with access to guns kill lots of people. Yes, we said it. This liberal/progressive asset agrees with the crazies on the right, for as the saying goes, even broken clocks are correct twice a day.
To proceed with this contentious debate while ignoring the national psychosis as it relates to access to weapons will only lead to another war against something. Unfortunately, like all the wars against stuff like obesity, illiteracy, poverty and drugs, America will lose that war too. Outlawing anything people feel they just gotta have will only lead to a thriving black market. Worse, trying to fight America's new war against guns will only lead to more gunfights.
We are now living in an age of the bunker mentality. Some Americans, (not a lot thank goodness, but enough) have convinced themselves they must be prepared to confront their own government at all times. These people are armed to the teeth and will fight to the death for their beliefs. Irrational beliefs to be sure, but they believe it just the same.
We are living in a country that can't find a way to provide healthcare to all of its citizens. The cost of identifying, medicating and monitoring the angry oddballs is currently cost-prohibitive. Slyly, many of these mental defectives (like Mr. LaPierre) are hiding behind the convenience of the 2nd Amendment to keep the flood gates of all weapons wide open.
In doing so, they've managed to convince even slightly saner minds that they too should be strapped for violence in the schools, at the work place, on the highways, in the movie theater or the shopping center. In the mind of the paranoid, one should be armed and ready to bust a cap any place people gather in public spaces. Americans have frightened themselves into thinking everybody and anybody could be out to get them at anytime. This is too is irrational thinking, but it is what many Americans think.
Sadly, its mindsets like this that make it virtually impossible to argue for a rational national response. When daily accounts of murder and mayhem is broadcast hourly of Americans killing Americans and then killing themselves afterwards, it only provides further justification for more firepower.
Perhaps it was decades of neglect in addressing America's uniquely deep seeded aggressive nature that gave rise to the angry American killer. Perhaps some of the madness could be prevented if Americans were shown what they look like to more civilized cultures. Perhaps as a nation, America just needs to have its collective head examined. To allow this degenerated capacity for thinking rationally and throughly about guns, gun violence and the mental health of an entire country is truly insane.
If America won't enact universal background checks, then it bloody well better find a way to enact universal healthcare. The thought of enacting neither is frightening. And no, the President trying to look like he understands the thrill of pulling a trigger every now and then won't get it done either!
