Pretoria, South Africa
Known worldwide as "Blade Runner", the 26 year old double-amputee runner who made history in the 2012 Olympics as the first Paralympian to compete on prosthetic legs, Oscar Pistorious has been arrested and held without bail in the shooting death of 30-year old law student and model Reeva Steenkamp, who was destined for a career in reality television. She was shot four times.
Pistorious was arraigned on Friday and was expected to be held without bail.
The U.S. State Department Bureau of Diplomatic Security warns of the danger of Pretoria and other South African cities: "On a rating scale of low, medium, high, and critical, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town are rated 'critical' for crime."
Citing South African Police Service 2011 crime statistics, the agency pointed out home invasion as a particularly violent crime that occurs "at an alarmingly high rate."
In Gauteng Province, which includes Pretoria and Johannesburg, there were 7,039 home invasions reported in 2011, according South African police statistics.
However, the arrest of Pistorious, and witness statements from neighbors who heard a disturbance at his home, was not one of the the thousands of home invasions that occur every year; the danger came from the homeowner with the gun, locked securely inside with 24 rounds of ammunition and a handgun. Neighbors who spoke to police pointed to 'domestic violence" as a motive for the slaying.
